Hi All, Here's an article about the advantage of waiting until next year to buy a flat panel. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=581&e=2&u=/nm/20031204/tc_nm/tech_flatpanels_dc Craig S |

Thaks for the link, Craig. Good article. I am in the market for a 15" or 17" LCD TV that can serve double duty as a PC monitor. Toying with buying now or waiting til after Xmas sales. I am picking up my DirecTV receiver with TIVO in a few minutes and an new LCD would go ever so nicely with it! : ^ ) Scott |

Scott, do it the other way around and get a 15 or 17" LCD computer monitor, and get a VGA box that will convert ntsc to VGA and let you use it as a TV -or- computer monitor. This way your monitor will be lots cheaper, you'll have many more choices, and it works really well... Cheers Gary |

I looked and don't have any photos with much detail, so I'll have to take some. Everything's "built in" presently so it's pretty hidden... gotta think of how to do it without ripping everything up... G |

Gary, Be certain the monitor has the quality features, (wide viewing angle, brightness, definition, etc.) that you want in a tv. Monitors usually have a more narrow viewing angle than the tv versions. At least that was my excuse for buying a Samsung for the bus. I adapted hardware from a bass boat seat, turned upside down and mounted to the bottom of an overhead cabinet behind the driver. This gets the screen down to where we old folks don't get a crook in our neck from trying to watch a high mounted set. Must be the bifocals. BTW I just read an article that said the lcd screens were a much more robust design than the plasma units, and were better suited for the vibration and climatic changes in an RV. Jim Stacy |

No problem here Jim, my monitor is a generic computer type and for the bus it's perfect. As long as it's fairly new tech (TFT made in the last 2-3 years) it'll be great and the virew angle not a problem. I'm very happy with the one I got from ebay for $50!!!! (it was missing it's stand so it went cheap!) I agree about LCD being better for a bus. Plasma devices have more "space" inside for things to rattle out of whack. LCD's are almost solid... only a few microns between the glass plates... Cheers Gary |

Yes, I am seriously considering the LCD monitor option too. In fact, that was my original plan. But recently I started seeing the TV prices coming down to what I consider reasonable, so have reconsidered getting a TV with PC function. (apparently Best Buy had a 15" TV w/ monitor for $300, but I missed the sale) There is some advantage, I think, to having the tuner built into the TV and being able to use a remote to flip back and forth. The other advantage for me to have the TV and monitor built into one unit, is that I can easily move it back and forth btwn the bus and my minivan depending on which vehicle I am taking on a trip. I agree that plasmas are not as suitable for a mobile environment. I think Plasmas will not be around much longer as LCDs get bigger and cheaper. Gary, does the VGA box have S-video input? |

Scott, nope, only 4 analog ntsc (RCA-style) and one VGA input. I never noticed much reduction in quality, it works very well Gary |

Jim Stacy, I would like to see a photo of your instalation with the inverted boat seat hardware. I have been trying to come up with a mounting devise that will meet a similar situation. It sounds like you may have put me on to something I can use. |
