My 4104 has some water and rot damage to the last 4-8" of wood at the rear of the coach where it bolts to the lower edge of the firewall. All of the rest is sound per probing with an ice pick. I know about the floor bolts from Luke but have other questions.
1. will I need to block the coach?
2. can I just cut out about a foot of wood and replace that section?
3. What type, grade, and thickness of plywood should I use?
4. should I cut the heads off the existing bolts and drive them out, then reuse the existing holes or drill new holes
5. What should I do about splicing the seam between the two pieces of wood? It will be under the bed pedestal and I could use plate and screws will this work?

Thanks Nelson Thomas, Knoxville

#1) Yes, block the coach.

#2) I think you could get away with 1 foot or so as long as you Rabbit the existing floor and the new piece and then use an good adhesive with some short lag bolts. If part of the rotted area is over the structure where the original bolts were then use the OM bolts.

#3) The original in My 4905 was 5/8 Marine grade.
the more plys, the better. If you are not removing the Original lanolium, you could use 3/4

#4) I un-scewed as many as I could, cut the heads off the rest and used the original hole if possible. Some of the bolts are self taping, most are bolts with nuts and lock washers.

#5) see #2

Hope this helps, John

If the floor of the 4104 is at all like the MCI take out the whole section that is bad lay on the Marine plywood and drill from the bottom up and put in the cap top bolts tighten down good in case you do flooring later the rest down the center channel use self tappers use lots of Marine caulk on the seams and over the channels. It was harder to get the old stuff out than puting in the new but worth it.

Nelson, E-mail me your e-mail address and I'll send you a picture of what to look for in the rear structure of your GMC bus. As far as Marine plywood, it is VERY expensive and the regular stuf also uses water proof glue so I would use stanrd c or b grade ply. I just helped with a senicruzer floor and 3/4 b grade is what was used with a good coat of primer and paint. They also glued .030" alum to the under side of the ply.
