Vibration mount for inverter? The manual for my Trace SW2040 says to mount it using rubber washers to reduce vibration. The inverter weighs over 100 pounds; rubber washers are not going to help much when mounting on a vertical wall.

Any ideas on how to mount vertically (as per manual) and reduce the vibration? How about computers? Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jack In KC

Normally, an inverter or other electronic equipment doens't need isolation from vibration. Busses don't vibrate to the point they will destroy electronic stuff unless they have a problem. Bolt it to a solid wall and don't worry about it. As you are well aware it is over 100lbs and the aluminum bay divider wall is probably not the best place to mount it without some reinforcement.

The manual that came with my SW4024 says to mount it on a shelf for mobile or marine applications. This would seem to eliminate a vertical wall as a mounting point. Real world, that is how most of them seem to be mounted. FWIW

Thanks for the help. I will probably go for a shelf.

The vibration mount recomendation may not be so much for the benefit of the inverter as it is for the occupants of the bus. My little 120 watt pure sine inverter makes so much mechanical 60hz noise that it drove me crazy until I relocated it under the bus in a bay. Mechanically conducted hum was the problem... mounting it on a stiff "sounding board" wall might make things even worse!! Rubber mounts helped a lot but on quiet nights while trying to sleep with the thing on, it wasn't enough.

Just my experience... SW4024's are a lot noiser than my little 120 watter...

Cheers

Jack I mounted mine in a bay in the front of the bus on a verticle wall. solid plywood and two large gromets under the plywood. Between the wall and the ply. mounted the unit solid the the board. Two years without a problem. I run full time with about 35k per year. Hope this helps Mike

Your local harley shop has come cool Isolation mounts, 1/4" studs vulcanized to either ends of a piece of rubber. Unlike most of the other things on my bike, they were pretty cheap.

Very fine idea Gary, and I can tell you that for those Harley mounts to carry that much weight, absorb THAT much vibration, and endure for as long as they do, they have to be good stuff.

Not that I EVER thought rubber bands and baby buggy mounts on a Harley was sissified, or anything. (grin)

they're pretty tough.

the bolts are 1/4", but the rubber biscuit is about an inch in diameter.

I have a parade fan on my Hog (It's an Ex-Police motor unit and I ride a lot on the Mexican Border) they use the isolation mount to mount the fan.

I think they're used in various places on Electra Glides, I dunno, Mine's a Road King.

If I remember right, they were only two or three bucks a piece. about the same as zip-ties.

Rubber mounts work , to be even safer install a small safty strap , should the mount fail the strap will keep it from falling.

If you worry about HOG stuff Aircraft Spruce or similar has $$$ similar isolators.

Many fine inverters have internal temp sensors that will cool in any position . However the vertical setup may have better cooling and need less fan.

Install however Da Book desires.

i had a job on time that required the install and maintaian 2-way radios in logging trucks, graders skidders and such and we had a real problem with vigration shaking every thing loose, we tried rubber mounts, springs andother solft material for them to float onhow ever we had one mounted on a piece of 1 in. plate steel and we never had one trouble with it from the time it went in till take out . after that we mounted every thing on the solidist part of the unit and we never had vibration related problems again. i know it sound crazy but it sure worked for us, and we had over 250 installed like this.

Gary, my imagination runneth over, pray tell, what is a parade fan?

On the RH side of a Hog, there is an air cleaner, right? A parade fan looks just about the same, goes on the LH side, but it has a smaller version of an automotive electric fan in it. It's kinda cool lookin'. Oh for cryin' out loud, here's a pic:

Goes on and off thermostatically, mine is Black though, not chrome.

Down in Calexico/Mexicali, in july and august (Hell, May sometimes) you can smell your engine if you sit at an intersection for more than 15 or 20 seconds--freaks me out.

Yeah, Vegas is almost as hot as Calexico/Mexicali.
