Technically, it COULD be done Jim. I could do it, and it might even last a while, but it would be a pain and it wouldn't REALLY be right. I wouldn't do it unless it was an emergency situation. Brian |

Yeah, you could reverse the field connections, but aren't the brushes angled? Also, is the starter pinion direction-specific? Gary |

Gary, yes, a starter with a bendix type drive will not engage when spun in the opposite direction. It would need to changed. And, the bendix drive for the OPPOSITE rotation will be an opposite twist... SO, you'd have to replace the bendix and the armature... the brushes MIGHT be slightly angled, but not that I'm aware of, and not enough to matter, in the short term. A starter with a Dyer drive MIGHT still work, but then the opposite side of the drive teeth would need to be chamfered So, in fact it can be done, but cost prohibitive for bendix drive, unless you got a good deal on a used opposite rotation armature and bendix...(it could happen) and for a Dyer drive starter, it ought to work, but the drive teeth will need to be modified. basically it's not worth the effort unless it's the only option.
