made the trip to austin this morning to get the "man show" bus started... 2 hot 8 d batteries.. 4 gallons fresh diesel... lots of pipe fittings... some fuel hose... new battery cables...an electric fuel pump.... i disconnected the old battery cables... hooked up new 1's.... 2 8d batteries in series to get 24 volts.... (just to spin it lots faster).. no damage to the starter...hooked electric primer up to fuel lines.... new fuel in a can.... vice grips on the fuel rack.... and let 'er fly..... lotsa smoke.... took about 7-8 tries before it finally would run on its own.. the engine hasn't been started in over 6 yrs....old fuel was really gummy....but it RUNS>>> SMOKES>>>>has over 40 lbs oil pressure at more than half throttle.... i could see that thru the smoke..... smoke cleared up after about 5 minutes of run time... and starts easily......i'm impressed with an old engine..... |

Did you disable the generator via the cutout relay to prevent it from trying to act like a motor when the engine was running? Or did you use three battery cables, two to provide 12 volts to everything else and 1 straight to the starter terminal? By the way, those old GMs were positive ground. |

nope.... all i did was unhook the battery cable from the solenoid on the starter....i isolated the starter from the bus.... then used a remote switch to start the engine... the original battery cables were connected to negative ground....may have been wrong.... |
