ALL bridges, underpasses etc. MUST be 13'6" OR (I SAY OR) be marked with a yellow sign saying minimum height BEFORE you get to the underpass...they will give you a block or so notice...so you can turn right or left....the TRICK is.....learn to read ALL signs....

Well brother dawg..lol it isnt that easy sometimes..try going thru upstate new york down rt 22 and try to turn a 40 foot bus around in someones driveway..it just dosnt work the way they say it should..am i questioning authrity again?
tho the signs are up...by the time you see the sign..lets say 1 to 5 miles away..country roads dont allways give you the space you need to do the 180..and it scares me to think of going to look forward to find a place then running out of room..id like to avoid turfing someones yard or better yet dam up a culvert with a 10.00-22 chunk of rubber..

thanks for the idea about the truckers atlas..i thught one is made....it has to with us out there..lol just didnt know where to look

Bill..I'll bring my catchers mit..ill get the extra peices

For my part--that is a personal trade off.

I chose a shorter, lower bus for my conversion.

On the other hand I will pay for it with reduced interior and storage.

Interesting point, In NY they often mark the overpasses 12'5"(espesially around NY city)even though they are actually 13'6". That, suppossedly, eliminates some liability if someone hits it.

what do you expect from ney york..lol i travel from north carolina to boston for work..alot of higheays but alot of back roard and small rrs'. Oh' they will tell you its a certin height or weight..but from time to time you should look at the people looking at the other " sucker" who made it too far and will back up traffic for the next 2 hours

You can buy the Truckers Atlas, up to date, at any Flying J or other large truck stop. There are pages with low clearances listed by State or Province and City. Some states have no low clearances. Try making a turn in downtown traffic when you get a one block warning for a 3.1 meter clearance. Do you Know your clearance in meters for Canada and Mexico? I found myself in that situation in Moncton, N.B. and the side streets were narrow and some corners sharper than 90 degees. Then I looked in the atlas that the former owner left in the bus. There it was in black and white. I could have avoided the whole problem by looking at the State or Province I was traveling through in advance. There were only about 6 low clearances listed in New Bruswick, so It would have been easy to spot. The truckers atlas costs about twice as much. Less than the cost of fuel used turning around and back tracking. Even an old one is OK because the clearances don't change often.

If you're close (my rule is 6" or less), stop & check! I remember a trash truck (could've been a recycling truck) in CT that was ~11' high tagging a railroad bridge a few years back--the bridge was marked at 11'3" (I went under it about twice a week). Obviously, it wasn't.

According to Fast Fred's specs posted on scenicruiser.com site the total coach height is 10' 11 1/4". Add your 18" rooftop and you're still less than 12' 6". If you're 13' 2" let some air out of de bags. I've had a 13' 0" clearance coach for 15 years, logged close to 500,000 miles. Been all over, many times in NY & NJ. The trick with backing up is get in the lane that is supposed to go in the direction you want. If you keep up with traffic most people can't tell the difference since coach's look pretty much the same from either direction.
