I asked this question on another board without much response, I thought I would try it here.

I have noticed that the prices have gone down on conversion shells, and some of the lesser expensive older conversions.

I (along with others) am limited money wise so I am going to have a hard time finding what I need. I want to limit my initial investment to about $30,000. Less if its a conversion that needs completing, or a shell.
I would pay more if it was an older conversion that was done right that needed minor changes. I want to limit our total investment when done to $50,000 or less.

Here are my peramiters, tell me if I'm nuts;

1)Good running driveline needing no work, or minor work.

2)Remodeling of older conversion is OK as long as the conversion was done right the first time.

3)Needing paint or cosmetics OK, as long as the coach is not a rust bucket or a wreck.

4) GM, Eagle, RTS, or MCI does not really matter.

5) Roof raise or not dosn't really matter.

6) I'm not a fancy guy so I'm not interested in duplicating the high end coaches, All we need is a good, solid, clean, reliable unit to travel from point A to point B. Sometimes hooked up, other times boondocking for a few days.

I have the time, I don't retire for 3 years. Other than the driveline, I have the mechanical ability to do one from a shell.I would rather buy one half way done to save the time, and hopefully money. That way I could work the bugs out prior to hitting the road in a few years.

Am I asking for too much?

We are flying to Arcadia in a couple of weeks, I guess I will see for myself if my goals are realistic or not.
Thanks
Jim

Jim, You are heading to the right place to get your answers! Many years of experience will be in one place and they love to share their knowledge. They will also have good buses there for sale. I wouldn't be surprised if you drove home instead of flying! Have fun..Sherry4104

You ought to do fine Jim, but please remember that it's 'driveTRAIN' not driveline.

I wouldn't ordinarily quibble about it but it IS a big investment for you, and asking if the driveline is in good shape is not remotely the same as asking what condition the drivetrain is in.

30 k huh? well...im tempted to put my scenicruiser on the block and upgrade...but im sure id regret it and never get lucky again with my present gf..

if you look...traderonline.com..the e place..bno sites here...youll find something nice and simple and in good shape..hit every link you can find, they are out there..i got my rig for 9500.00 and found in for sale on the web..im an unpictured site. since then..i have found so many nice rigs that i am considering buying and selling them whe i get my new location for my shop, farm and home. around the philly area there was a mid sixties, well running, nice conversion that ended up going for $6000.00 i missed it by 2 hours.
remember tho...no matter what you get you WILL have to maintain the drivetrain, get it looked at at some point and what is one mans junk is another mans treasure ( so to speak )

Your expectations seem to be well in line and I don't think you will find it too difficult fulfilling them, other than just finding it. My personal advice is to concentrate on finding one with a good drivetrain that is in no need of major repairs. Do your research for one on the net and establish what u want. After u establish what u want then start the real shopping. Don't fall into the trap of shopping "cheap" because more than likely that is precisely what u will end up with. Just keep in mind that the heart of a bus is what u don't see from the curb; the drivetrain. Your expectations are reasonable and good luck in your pursuit.

Ace has a nice Eagle in that price range ($45,000) and I think it is almost completed. He posts on the boards quite often. Don't know if he has put an ad on this board or not.

Thanks Richard and Yes your correct about our coach and yes again, I have paid for an add here but it won't appear until they update the site which could be too late... I hope anyway!

It was just updated on the 20th so it may be a while before my add shows up!

I'm looking at a 1989 Vanhool with a 6cyl mid engine Mann Question #1 what is a Mid Engine Mann? IS a vanhool not a wise choice for the Us since I have read in the past that parts are expensive and hard to come by. I can't afford any mistakes, this being my first time around and I am as green as they come. Any advice would be greatly apppreciated

I spotted a VanHool in Northville MI, a few weeks ago. A very nice conversion.

I thought it was gorgeous.

I was in your boat last summer. Getting ready to retire and wanted a way to leave Texas and go north for the hot months. I was days away from buying an Eagle 10 to convert when I ran across the 86 Newell that I bought. I wouldn't try to talk anyone out of a conversion and was just ready to start my own. I am sure that I missed a lot by going th way I did, but here is a link to the coach I ended up with. It was a little more than your budget, but not much. I couldn't have done it for that price counting nothing for my labor.

NICE coach, Doug. Congratulations and many great miles and smiles with it!

Hope to check back and see if the pics can be enlarged. Looks pristine and ...simple. Great choice. :)
