Would appreciate some opinions on the location of a set of large (hadley) 29" air horns on the top of my bus conversion. Opposite sides, same side, middle offset.... Looking for safety considerations and practical experiences....

Thanks

they "look" best on top....also,get damaged easier on top, they look best separated ,one left side one right side, they work best together (1 foot apart)..they work best with the whistle switch real close to the horns...if the whistle switch is over 4 feet from the horns, you have an'air' sound for a little while, till enough air gets there to honk

I like them best on the side, above the drivers head, also close to the valve that way.

Wouldn't you LOVE to put them on the back bumper facing rearward?

Ian, now THAT was a good laugh!

...You know that gives me an idea though.

My coach has a back-up alarm that is about 8" in diameter and loud, it would be easy enough to install a momentary switch on the dash!

He..He..He..

As for the horn question... I'm planning on installing a nice 25" Grover that I've had for a few years, adding to, and right next to, the original equipment air horns, I figure right down
near ear level is an attention getter. I also purchased a large pair of trumpet type electric horns to beef up the original equipment electrics.

I have a set of Leslie LS-3 from a UP road diesel. I turned the stairs for the entry to face the rear of the bus and the horns are mounted in the created cavity that is just right of the center of the bus about 4' behind the bumper with the 2 larger units facing fwd. center and the smaller one facing the rt. front wheelwell. Combined unit occupies a space of 36"x36"x12". The largest bell is 30" long and 11.5' dia. To be used sparingly, as they are not highway legal, at least not around here. 165db @ 7'. I considered the roof, but concluded that they might just lift the front of the bus off the road in a good headwind.

I mounted my airhorns under the bus just below the front bumper. I wanted to have the air horns at traffic level where the people that need to hear it will hear it. Modern fire trucks and ambulances have their warning devices down low. Away from the occupants inside the vehicle. I remember the story my old fire captain told me once when I was a rookie. He had the Q2 siren blaring and he didn't get the driver's attention in the vehicle ahead of him till he stuck it in the rear window of the station wagon.

I did like Jeff, and stuffed mine under the front bumper. They're off a '56 Mack, and will almost lift the back of a Chevette off the ground at close range! Cheers...JJ
