Can a marine generator be converted "easily" to RV use? | ||

Jerry, By 'marine' I assume you mean a water cooled engine with a water cooled exhaust manifold? If so, a fan cooled radiator can be substituted for the heat exchanger. G | ||

Jerry I have an Onan ex-marine genset with a Smoky start up Perkins engine. By that I mean all Perkins will smoke on start up and as it warms up, It will stop and do just fine in case yours has this engine. They do just fine for RV use as you just to plumb in the cooling system as George has said, No problems with it either. In case anyone has had a heating problem with a genset, They have the 40 below additive that will drop the temp of the genset and do the job of keeping it cooled down too.. I use a radiator out of a 4 cylinder P/U and it works fine>> Gomer | ||

No problem simply adding a radiator . BUT You should check on the installation of the origional setup. The good ones will use a heat exchanger , so the unit never "sees" sea water. If it was direct cooled with sea water , I would pass , unless its REALLY!!! cheap. FF | ||

So if I understand you correctly that the difference is on how it's cooled. Either directly with seatwater or through an exchanger that uses seawater? So to convert it I would have to plumb a radiator in place...correct? | ||

KE-RECT. Yes plumb in the cooing system andinstall an electric fan with a temp sensor if you choose too. Mine will automatically turn on and off as temp rises or falls. Auto parts store will have them. Salvage yards will have the radiator. Hook up the hoses and fire the ole gal up Gomer |
