The 102A3 that I bought last month as a non-runner has a 6V92 which was inframed 185k ago.
It started blowing oil out of the left bank.
It has been sitting for a year. Charged the batteries and fired it up yesterday. It started right up, had good oil pressure. The mechanic seems to think that it has a cracked piston by the tapping sound that it is making. His and my thoughts are: get into the left side, if the wrist pin bushings are not sloppy and the bearings are tight, replace the bad piston/liner and walk the dog.
I appreciate your feedback. There seems to be a lot of good info. that passes through this site.
Thanks, Bruce

At 185K the engine has a lot of life left in it. Pulling the left head and repairing the failure would be the way to go. Hopefully the valves didn't get bent if a piston broke. Incidently, it is common practice to replace a "jug" if something happens in a Detroit. A lot of times a valve will drop into the clyinder and do exactly what you describe. (Let us know!)

nobody ever answered your question....I'd expect 5 to 7 hundred thousand out of a GOOD rebuld...'if' it had a rebuild 185 thousand ago...it SHOULD have documents...lots of people 'tell' you it was rebuilt...I think I would start off with an oil sample sent in after a good warm up

I agree with Geoff, lots of life left, make sure you replace everything that's not 100%.

if you have ground-up engine parts in your oil...be kinda silly to work on the left bank..
