High winds a possible factor in motor home crash that killed six
By Mark Thiessen
Associated Press

DRAPER, Utah — Investigators said high winds may have played a role in the weekend crash of a motor home that killed several members of a Washington state family.
Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret Morning News
The father, who was driving, and four children were killed instantly Sunday when the vehicle went off Interstate 15 in Draper, south of Salt Lake City. The family's mother died later Sunday in a hospital of her injuries, Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Chris Kramer said.
Four other children survived the crash, but one of them was in critical condition Monday at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Kramer said. The family is from West Richland, Wash.

What a horrible accident. My prayers to the family. It looks like the vehicle was made of plastic, one of the photos even shows the rear cap just popped right off! I am glad I am doing a bus conversion for my rv!!

Tragic! However, high winds can move the heaviest of them; just ask many truckers that have been laid over from winds. My Grumman, at abt. 29,500 got sat over 1 lane on I-10 in the Fl. panhandle in 1997 while sitting and waiting out a tornado warning up ahead on my weather band (they missed the "area" by a couple of miles). Believe me, that will get your attention and you will immediately change any old driving patterns you may have had. I now vacate the highway for heavy rain, snow, and high winds. In one quick lesson I learned that it is better to be a day or two behind schedule.

What an incredible loss. Such a tragic event to even lose one life. I am agast at the pix of what looks like the remains of an "A" class stix'n staple motorhome. A wonder that any of the family made it out of there. My prayers to them......

My "78" vintage "Mallard" C class RV has had me repairing and replacing things for years but I notice the walls and roof are getting a bit "soft" these days. Makes me speed up the time frame on the ole RTS. The "78" will probably become a cabin somewhere till it has to be towed to the recycle place.

And folks LAUGH at us for converting a bus!!! We still look inside the "stick-n-staples" units to see what they have done and to get ideas (mostly of what not to do). It amazes me how much glass (non-tempered) and potential "projectiles" are in them. If you look at the TV pictures (2nd link) you can see what looks like a free standing dining chair on it's side (rear cap pic). I read posts on another RV board and they are always complaining how their cabinet doors don't stay shut when they hit the brakes hard (canned goods & jars flying thru the air). Can you imagine that in a roll-over?!? I bought our windows out of a wrecked Winnie and while the outside didn't look that bad the inside looked like a tornado when thru it. One of the reason why everything in the bus will be either securely attached or behind well-fastened doors. And no mirrored ceilings/walls for us! I do wonder how anyone got out of that RV alive.

A high school friend of mine drives coaches for a living. One day he was crossing the Golden Gate bridge with a full load in a Prevost. A gust of wind caught the bus and he was in the next lane before he could say "Bob's your Uncle". He was lucky no vehicles were next to him and the lane he ended up in was still going the correct direction.
The other possibilities are unpleasant to think about.
