There is an RV dealership down the road from me that has a mid seventies AM General bus conversion for sale for $23000. I like the way the interior was done but I don't know much about busses or AM General busses in paticular. Is it a good bus? Any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks. Steve |

I don't have an AM Gen'l but have several friends and acquiantances that do. Hell for stout. The drivetrain, if still stock, can be upgraded to a stronger engine. I know of 2 that have turbo'ed 8v71s and 1 w/ a 6v92 turbo, all LH, w/3spd auto. The guy w/the 6v92 is researching putting a Voight 4 spd into his. Front cap kit is available from R&M using the MCI9 windshields. Many like to boast that they are the fore-runner to the HumVee, built by the same company. A stout bus with good inside space and headroom and the best candidate of the transits for a slide-out. Lots of space underneath for storage compartments. |

Drive it and see if you like it. Then have someone who knows buses and bus conversions check it out from top to bottom. And be sure to look at other bus conversions before you buy one. For a newbie I know this sounds like a monumental task, but otherwise you are buying blind-- don't be in a hurry. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

two dogs........ do you want to start a fight on this last day of the year? OK I'm up for it. I agree 23k may be a little high, but what do we know about the conversion. Hey what the heck do you call a real bus?? Surely not an rust bucket called an Eagle you didn't mean to call that a bus did you? Michael with an AMG PS.... just kidding about being a bus but not about the rust, Steven if the AM General has what you want get it and start having fun while two dogs and the rest of us labor on our conversion. |

Hey thanks to everyone for all of your input. I am looking around because I want to make sure that I get a good bus. I did offer the guy 15k for the AMG, he laughed. Three months from now when he still has the bus I think he may be willin to deal. I also looked at a '66 MCI 30 footer. Nice bus but I think I want one a little bigger. I'm trying to learn all that I can before plopping down the big bucks, so I may be asking more questions in the future. Thanks for letting me pick yer brains for your wisdom and experience. Hope you all have a Great New Year. |

Hey I@n has the first humorous/oddball posting of the year! After first getting a chuckle from it i started to look at it a little closer. Ok so the guy is definately marching to the beat of a different drummer but i would actually like to talk to him about what he had in mind when he did it, and would really like to see how he put it together....might learn something here that could be used elsewhere someday or it might trigger some other idea. Did he just cobble it together or is he a craftsman? Had to figure out a way to support the weight. Say... this isn't FF's bus and boat is it? ( Just kidding Fred! ) You gotta give the guy an A for imagination whether you like the results or not. LOL!! |

I'm all for free expression...love original ideas..... that would be great to take to the lake and spend the week- end...I can even imagine I@N being a good sport and rideing in it...after a couple of all cavity body searches...the humor is GONE |

Dogs, These good folks are living their dream, too. And this web site is full of unique ideas - even yours - isn't it? I think their bus is gorgeous! Although, I have to admit, it'd be hard to drive under a bridge with your mast up. Ian www.busnut.com |

Ian: All in the eye of the beholder. Of all the single words that describe this creation that came to my mind, gorgeous was not one of them. This is definately one of those "different strokes for different folks" things. And, I would be willing to wager that the owner is not looking to stay in an RV park and much prefers the back section of an older "mobile home park", where remarkably, u happen to see quite a few of these creations. Funny thing though, if u put this creation and a new Marathon or similar in the same mall parking lot, I would also wager that "The Boat" would get almost as many lookers and perhaps more! |

gor•geous [ gáwrjəss] adjective 1. beautiful: outstandingly beautiful or richly colored dressed in gorgeous silks 2. pleasing: very pleasant ( informal ) a gorgeous spring morning If you look close and use you imagination’s I bet they have the kitchen, bath and living room area downstairs. The upstairs most likely has the bedroom and an aft deck. Now using that imagination again place yourself sitting on the aft deck sipping you favorite beverage next to a beautiful beach, river, a quite mountain area or………. I do not think these folks would enjoy an RV Park. I for one think they and their sailbus, as it is called, have a place in our environment. Sialbusnut Hmmmm. Michael |
