I keep my 59 4104 at a secure 24/7 guarded and gated truck lot. Took "Tubby" out for a drive on sat. she was acting like the filters were clogged or was running out of fuel. Just put new filters in about 75 miles ago, and she should have about 120 gals in the tank. This means the two easy things should have been OK. So it must be something else, right???? Wrong, I don't have a working fuel guage(supprise, supprise) so I put my stick in the filler. 1-1/2 inches of fuel. I believe that is considered empty. I think I will have a talk with the mgr. of the lot today. Happy to know it is something simple. But pissed to find 120 gals of fuel missing while it is stored at a SECURE LOT. I guess I will be installing a lock on the filler door. Howard Berman PD4104-4139 Near Phila, PA |

We had the same thing happen to us with our bus but it was parked in the side yard of where DAvid lives during the week. We figure someone (& we think we know who) slipped in while he was gone one weekend and got our fuel. We also decided to put locks on the fillers too. We need to do that before we refill and winter starts getting cold around here (a lot of folks use "heating oil"). Shame we didn't do it sooner, ain't it! Lorna |

I think everyone should lock their fuel tanks and engine compartment, not just because of siphoning, but to ward off the "terrorists" that like to put dirt or paper in someone's tank. One guy I know had to get his engine rebuilt after the neighborhood kids put dirt and water in his engine oil filler tube. |

I think a lock on the engine compartment sounds like a good precaution, have lock on fuel door, I had a log skidder parked in the woods where I was clearing some land, made it a habit to go over rig before starting which was fortunate as one morning I found a pyramid of dirt under motor below oil fill spout.Put finger into oil fill and it was gritty, well if I had fired the old girl up I would have been out of work for awhile, I dropped the pan were it was and cleaned the dirt out. There was a teenage hoodlum living down the road thats why I checked it each morn. Above post made me think whats to stop someone from getting there jollies at the exspence of my Detroit. I think I'll add a lock. Randy |

Fortunately, for me, my coach has locking compartments including ones for the fuel and batteries. Unfortunately, there are no locks on the engine compartment doors! I believe I'll have to do something about that. Brian |

I found in an old Warshawski auto catalog, a barrel keyed lock that was used on the hoods of the old "muscle" cars. 1/4 turn and it is locked and being a barrel key, it is difficult to get around. Because it was a hood lock, the push on/pull off motion was perfect for this work duty. To secure the side engine doors, I disconnected the simple wrench type lock and made up a manual handle inside the door. You have to unlock the engine door to access the handles. I think the locks are about $20 for a pair. As I look at the fuel door, I can use a similar lock to secure it also. Just passing an idea along that might be helpful. "Imagine Your Dreams" CDCDCD |

Yep, I'm still concerned about this as well, but I'm skeered to start punching holes in the doors! Guess I better get over it soon though. This came up a few months ago: http://www.busnut.com/bbs/messages/233/4710.html?1067305351 |

"A lock only keeps out an Honest Man". If you lock it almost any kid can destroy a huge amount of coach defeating the lock. My sugestion would be to glue razor blades inside around the inside edge of the fuel fill. At night they would be hard to notice. FAST FRED |

A lock is not a deterent to a serious criminal...one who is intent on stealing or damaging your possesions. Still, a lock WILL deter a casual criminal, or vandals who wish to simply pour water and dirt into your engine. Most people are honest enough, but a lock will dissaude many times more people from commiting a criminal act, when it presents itself, than trusting to the goodness of people. A lock will not stop a determined thief or vandal, thats true enough, however it will slow them down, even if only for a few seconds, and that, plus any noise they make getting past the lock, might be enough to alert you to their activity. I think installing any device capable of inflicting injury to someone messing with your coach is a really bad idea, not only could you yourself forget and get caught by something like that, or worse someone innocent, there is also the possibility that if someone, a criminal even, gets caught in such a device and the police are alerted, YOU might be the one in trouble with the law. "My sugestion would be to glue razor blades inside around the inside edge of the fuel fill. At night they would be hard to notice." Then, you get sued into the poorhouse after you get out of prison. Yeah, GREAT plan! |
