I only have about 18,000 miles on my bus (4106)since a local company installed one of their exchange engines (8V71). They ship engines worldwide. I am very happy with my engine. When they did this, I had them install a Jake brake, and of course I got all new accessories. My biggest problem is clutch (also new at that time) CHATTER. When I drove the bus out of the shop, it almost shook my cabinets loose. Adjusting the idle down helped a lot, but I really would like to go back to my OLD clutch, which did not shake the bus. I have been advised to check the radius arm bushings, but frankly, I did not have this problem before the new engine went in. It has been about 8 years, so other than 1st gear adventures, I have am a satisfied customer. I really don't have the desire to pull the tranny because I have done it before when the spicer needed 1st and Reverse. I will do it but would rather pay someone else close to me (Springfield, MO). I will run the flywheel to the clutch shop (leg work) and back for the reinstall. If I had a pilot shaft to reinstall the clutch, I might consider this job myself. It really isn't that bad....I just don't have the time. Where can I borrow a pilot shaft??? Thanks for listening. |

Larry It might be that they installed an incorrect pressure/friction not intended for bus application. Mel from Vancouver Island gave some of his experiences not so long ago. Try and borrow a pilot shaft, and if you are unable get one made by a local machineshop. Joe. |

If you got an exchange flywheel , it may not have been reground. Your old one was flatter ? Dead throttle start is about all you can do. FF |

Larry check the springs in the pressure plate. They are a red and blue springs. Blue is the ones for a bus NOT RED!! I had a problem with mine and it was a simple fix. GREASE LOL the Throw-out bearing shaft was dry and that constituted the bearing not sliding on the shaft and I would get a chatter too. Gomer |

Thanks for the help...I think I have found a diesel shop here that will take a look at this. If I had a pilot shaft I would do it myself. I have done the tranny R&R before. Thanks for the color code advice, Marvin. FF, I am thinking your assumption is correct. The new(?) flywheel is not true. |

Larry make your own pilot shaft, just take a piece of hard wood and turn it down to the proper sizes as you do not need the fluting just the inside of the pilot bearing and the inside dia. of the clutch plate. VERY easy to make anyone with a wood lathe can make you one in 20 minutes. i changed the clutch on my bus one time in the Nevada desert using only a deep socket and an extention and good old duck tape, had it out and back in in 8 hours with them for a shaft. not hard to do , good luck.. mel 4104 |

Mel, I think he needs the flutes to do a Twin Disc clutch because the transmission won't go back in if the two discs are not aligned. We just did the clutch on our 4106, and we got parts from Luke at US Coach. He lent us a pilot shaft(plastic) which had the full spline. We shipped it back to him about two weeks ago. Also, I think it helps to make sure that the idle is set down to 450 RPM. For what it's worth. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher Ketchikan, Alaska (Message edited by pvcces on April 05, 2011) |

Oil on the clutch will make it shake. |

Might also have bent the clutch plates installing the box. Loose engine mounts. forgot to re-fit the pilot bearing. Dirk |
