I asked a related question a couple days ago. This is sort of the back door to that same issue. I'm wondering what your mountain towing experiences are with a bus that uses the 6V92 engine. What's a typical grapevine speed with no toad or a negligible toad? What speed can I expect on the Grapevine with about an 8 to 10 thousand pound toad?

thanks,
jp

In my limited experience, horsepower is irrelevant, 'cuz the Grapevine is always 30 mph, due to heavy traffic, and sightseers. Cheers...JJ

Sightseers on the grapevine?

I can tow my F-150 up the grapevine with my 04 (6-71 ) at 15-30mph

6v92ta, 325hp set-up, 730 trans. Ford Ranger 4x4, approx. 4400lbs.----2nd gear, abt. 40mph most of the way--35 in a couple of spots, and depending on traffic "gotchas", 1st and 30! But, I always use Techachapi, anything, to avoid LA.

I don't know about the 30mph stuff, I rock up the 'vine at 65 - 70+ all the time, but not in the bus. :)

In my 32,000 lb. RTS with a toad, 350HP 6V92TA with 4:10 rear end, if I can't climb a mountain at 55 mph+, then I have to drop down into second where I go 45-50 mph because I shift up to third at 55. Now if I had a 740 tranny with the extra gear, I could probably keep it at 55.

All buses with 6V92TA's are not equal-- the factors you have to consider are:

1. Engine horsepower (varies)
2. Rear end ratio
3. Transmission gear ratios
4. Weight of bus
5. Weight of toad or trailer

When I had an empty bus (no toad either), 350 HP, and a 4:56 rear end I never dropped out of third gear and used to run with the cars instead of being in the slow lane.

Of course, I have heard of a very nice and very heavy Eagle conversion that could run up the Grapevine at 65 mph, but the owner wasn't satisfied and installed an even bigger more powerful motor.

I haven't heard the test results yet............

I bet his name was Hal! Last time I heard his series 60 was cranked up to about 650 HP.

The numbers Hal gave while at his home in Henderson recently, were more in the area of 550HP, if I remember correctly. But that was almost two months ago. Soooooo...????? I wonder? 'Fess up Hal!!! More boost? Joe Laird's Royal Eagle claims 500 HP, and Greg Bush's 650 Cat makes his 4501 SceniCruiser howl. BTW, how do you get that little old drop box to handle that much HP and torque? Cheers...JJ

Interesting. So, other than propane injection, what can you do to soup up a 6V92?

thanks,

A 6V92TA at 350HP is a nice setup-- you won't smoke or overheat the clyinders, and it gets good fuel milage for the power. If you have to have more than 350 HP you need a bigger engine. I don't believe in propane injection myself.

If you think about it, you don't need more than 350HP unless you like to barrel up the hills.
