Help! I have a friend with an '04, as I do, which is eating fan blades (and radiators). His original, he tells me, was mounted with a rubber mount? and lasted the life of the coach until recently, as far as he knows. He has since gone through 2 plastic & 2 metal fans, and needs another. These have been solidly mounted. No vibration, motor mounts good, just breaks apart after some miles. Any suggestions and sources? Thanks. Ted Calvert Chowbus 4104 Ohio |

Sounds to me like they rubber mounted the original fan because of vibration at that point on the engine, 4 ruined solidly mounted fans tend to confirm this for me, he needs to find a way to mount a fan that is vibration isolated, like the original fan. Brian |

If he can't find another blade and damper assy, another possibility would be to find a fluid fan assy for it. They used these on the older city busses with 6-71's in them. Most parts are similar to the newer ones |

Methinks that mayhaps the flange or the shaft that the fan assembly mounts on is bent. Use a dial indicator, and check for runout both on the face, and on the rim of the flange (or shaft). more than .025 is unacceptable. I know it doesn't seem like much, but .025 at the edge of of the flange is about 3/8ths at athe end of a 3 ft. fan blade. Airplane props at 6 ft. dia. are allowed .0025 at the edge of a 4" dia. flange. It's really important, and I feel the shaft or flange was bent in the failure of the original fan. Let us know, please? ...JJ |

I have a fluid coupling assemby from an 71 that will bolt to the oil pump housing. This was rebuilt and was going to be used on my 92 but the 92 cannot be operated w/o the vibration damper and it interfers with the fan housing. I'm in oregon and if interested fire away. |

John I had the sqme problem, after 17 years of trouble free/no fan hub problems. On saterday befor thanksgiving on my way to Orlando the fan hub rubber seperated and released the fan, and it took off with half the hub and buried itself in the radiator. After two months of searching I found a replacment, that includes a snap ring and washer so that the new hub canot move if after 17 years it comes apart again. e-mail me for more details johns4104s@yahoo.com John |

My guess is that the fan blades are breaking due to fatigue, they are flexing too much. Jayjay has some good points. If this isn't a stock setup I would check to see that the rad is bigger than the blades or that the rad is not covered or plugged up. A fan blade rotating from an area where it can pull air to one where it can't will flex excessively and break. |
