I want to purchase a new 4x4 pickup and I also want to be able to tow it behind my mci 9.
What does the pickup have to have to tow it four wheels down?
thanks carl mci 9

Check the Owners Manual carefully to find this information.

When we bought our Dakota all wheel drive 4 door pick-up in 2001, the dealer said it could only be towed with all wheels up and not even on a dolly. On closer inspection of the Owners Manual, I found the Recreational Section and it said how to select the Neutral, etc. for all wheel down towing.

Some Ford pick-ups can be reprogrammed for all wheels down towing. Not sure which Chevys can be.

Remember, just because it is a manual tranny, does not mean it can be towed all wheels down. There are just as many automatics that can be towed this way.

Just don't believe what the salesman says, get to see it in print.

Peter.

Motorhome magazine and FMCA publish towables every year-- the Jan 2004 FMCA magazine has the new listings for 2004, they are also available on their website, but you have to be a member to see the list online. I just checked the MH mag website and they only list up to 2003. In short, it appears all the GM/Chev 4wd pickups are towable, and Dodge and Ford have some towable in automatics and all in manual transmissions. If you are interested in a specific 4wd truck I can look it up for you.

Geoff,
If I am not abusing your goodwill, I am interested in determining if I can tow 4 wheels down:

1984 Toyota Landcruiser, 4WD, stick.

2001 Ford F250 Superduty, 4WD, Crew cab, Auto.

Thanks for your time and help

Jim-- I was only looking at the 2004 listings, for your vehicles you need to look at the Remco website and perhaps give them a call:

I have been towing GM 4X4's for the last 5 years with no problem. 99 3/4 ton Silverado, then 2002 Avalange now 2004 same. Have done about 80,000 miles of towing with no problems. The latest one is really great - you don't have to leave the key on to unlock steering wheel. It works for me!

We've towed a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 fulltime for almost 5 years now. It is a 5 speed. We put the gearshift and transfer case levers in neutral, turn the key one click to the right from the lock position to unlock the steering column and away we go! Does not add miles to the odometer, and we've been from coast to coast and border to border several times.

you can tow an f250 4x4 auto four-down if you do not select the electronic shift on the fly but get the manual 4wd shift lever mounted on the floor.

If you have a 4x4 with electronic shift on the fly, you gotta install a driveline disconnect. that's what i'm having to do, via remco. gonna be finished next week.

The 'Cruiser should be fine.

I plan to tow either a Jeep Cherokee, a K-5 Blazer, or a VW Rabbit pickup.

The cherokee is a great tow vehicle. All of them can be towed 4 down without any modifications, and they can be had for a good price these days.
