I am thinking about using a Ford truck fuel tank as a black water holding tank. I am worried about the inside coroding quickly. What do you guys think?

Uh oh here we go again...

To summarize, I've been using an aluminum fuel tank (round) from a Peterbilt truck going on close to 6 maybe more years now. No major problems and no coatings applied. I think if you do as I have and dump every chance you can, you wont have problems. Ling sitting urine might be another issue.

The marine world has used aluminum holding tanks for years, you won't see plastic holding tanks on most boats.
Mine are aluminum for waste and stainless for the fresh water it is a 1998 model and sets for long periods before being pumped never a problem

well i was a marine mechanic for 12 years and had many leaking aluminum tanks, both holding and fuel. to be fair they were all in saltwater bilges and probably had bonding issues. Not all were in the welds but most were.

Nope I filled the boat to make a trip to Mexico then backed out because of problems there but it is a good selling point for the boat if I can find a buyer LOL

Ace,

You cannot use aluminum tanks for waste. I guarantee that they will fail in forty or fifty years.

I think that a factory fuel tank would be fine as the factory would have properly treated the tank to resist corrosion during manufacturing.

So, use it. If you have any concerns, install it so that it is removeable. . . .

There was one on our coach when I bought it back in 03, no telling when it was put in. No leaks so far.
