I lost power to my compressor, there seems to be a wire spring of some type inside the metal drive gear, that goes into a fiber or bakelite type drive gear. I can't seem to find the spring in the parts manual, or is it something all together different? Thanks Bill 4104-4032

Thanks for the info, with this weather I don't think I will be doing any repairs soon. When I took off the compressor there was nothing there except half of a spring and some bolts with the metal grommet from the fiber drive still around them. And the tie wire still through the bolts. I don't know what happened , the compressor seems to turn freely and the engine runs fine. Maybe it was just worn out. Bur since the compressor is out its going to get rebuilt. Thanks --Bill 4104-4032

Bill, if the fiber gear is broken off, remove the oil pan and you'll find the pieces there after the engine has run awhile.

GM used a fibre gear there to save the engine from damage due to loose gear parts getting into the drive train when it fails.Fibre will just get ground up if it gets between the teeth on any of the other gears. They make a steel drive gear for these, but if it ever fails, the pieces will take out the gear train.Could have failed from water freezing in main air line, putting a very large load on compressor. Make sure the pop off valve is working properly.
