Guys,

Has anyone any comments on the 8.1 diesel and Allison combo in a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1 ton dually. It has the 4 doors with the rears opening suicide fashion.

Is this a GM or DD or ? motor and is it and the tranny any good in this application?

I have seen one for sale with 101,000 miles, is it worth the $16,500 they are asking?

How do those rear door seals hold up, any wind noise, etc? Thanks.

Peter.

If 2001 it's the 6.5T diesel. And the 4 speed hydromatic (not allison).

The engine is a good transportation engine, but a poor pullerl.

Gary,

But I said it's an 8.1 with an Allison option not the revamped 6.2 GM diesel.

My guess it was optioned from the bigger class trucks, maybe a 6500 or similar

Chevy never had an 8.1 diesel. The current 8.1 is a gas and now has the allison option. I think these started in 2002, but time gets away from me.

The current Izuzu designed diesel is about 6 liters I believe and is coupled to the allison as is the 8.1 gas.

They did put that 8.2 Detroit in some of the mid-sized trucks, but that was a bit of a dog.

I wonder if this is the gas motor then, but I never heard of a 494 in motor either. 454 or 502 yes, but a 494?

Thanks for the input.

Thanks, I think I know what you mean, bad idea anyway, I was lead to believe it was a diesel motor, don't need no gas burners, been there, done that, big hole in wallet.

i think youre mistaken....a neighbor has a new 8.1 with the allison in a 4dr 4wd dually.... its very impressive as far as towing and driving.... the allison has to "learn" your driving habits... and with a 3.73 ratio you'll get 14+ mpg....

The 8100 has plenty of power, but is stupendously thirsty, like any big gasser.

Bluntly, I find 14MPG from an 8100-powered 4WD crewcab dually absolutely impossible to believe. I'd question 14MPG from a dually with a 6.0, never mind one with 35% more engine.
