Looking for opinions: Can you do without the leveling valves on a converted mci 9? How about the overtravel valve? The basic idea of the leveling valves is to level the coach in case of uneven load; everyone sitting on the passenger side to look at a particular scenic view, for instance. In a conversion, most of the load is static -- tanks, refer, stove, etc. The 200 to 600lbs of passengers isn't really gonna affect the leveling of the coach in any particular way. So is it OK to replace the automatic leveling valve (and kneeling, and overtravel valve) with a manual valve operated from the drivers seat? Pressurize the airbags when you air up, and off you go. Also allows you minor leveling when parked for the night -- a valve per wheel and you can raise or lower each side of the coach 8", allowing up to 16" of heigh difference over 8 feet of width. So I did this with the front airbags on my mci 9, mostly because they're easy to get to. To get to the leveling valves on the drive and tag I think I wanna take the tires off. But I'm not sure about a couple of parameters. What's the maximum i can pressurize an airbag to? 65lbs? 120lbs? Is the overtravel valve really neccesary? what does it normally protect against? Appreciate any thoughts |

Hi Bruce: I would refer you to the suspension section of your maintenance manual which gives proper ride hight settings from the axle to the body, measured from the rubber axle bumpers on the axle to the body. Your air bellows and shocks are built only to rise or fall just so far before stressing their limits!!! It is very possible that you can design a system that works, but before doing so, I would suggest that you refer to the book. Engineers spent many hours designing a system to provide a "Good Quality Ride" while keeping in mind the limitations of the suspension components!!1 I Hope this HELPS!!! And, Happy & SAFE BUSSIN" to ALL!!! LUKE at US COACH I |
