I posted this on another message board, answering a question "mid west: whats a good trip to do coming from the east this summer?". I thought it was a good answer, worth sharing here. Maybe more of you guys can tell us about great places to visit. (Note, I am not affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce, I don't own a business, and this isn't spam. We genuinely like it here, and we love visitors) If you're coming through Ohio, our town of Marietta is good for a few days. Marietta is located at the junction of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, in southeastern Ohio. We're 3 hours from Pittsburgh, 2 hours from Columbus, 3 1/2 hours from Cincy, 1 1/2 hours from Charleston WV. We have the Ohio River museum, with a retired sternwheel towboat and lots of models and displays. We have the Lee Middleton doll factory and outlet just 20 minutes away in Belpre (Be careful, you can develop a considerable wallet hole there). Everybody enjoys the factory tours at Fenton Art Glass, right across the river in Williamstown WV. There is a factory outlet store where they peddle their hand blown trinkets, and you can develop a wallet hole there too. If you drive 20 minutes up State Route 26 you'll come to the canoe livery. You can park your rig, pay them a paltry sum, and they'll haul you (in an old skoolie) several miles up the Little Muskingum River and drop your gang into the small, winding river with canoes. You paddle downstream through some beautiful country back to where you parked, hop back in your bus and boogie. We have considerable histori-crap here, including several indian burial mounds, more covered bridges than you can count, (each of the covered bridges seems to have a cool, clear swimmin' hole nearby, great fun for the young'uns), and one of the nicest New England style downtown areas in this part of the country. We also have the Campus Martius Museum, dedicated to the first anglo settlers in the northwest territory (Marietta was the capital of the Ohio territory from 1787 to,,, oh,,, sometime later). On the Muskingum River we have the last remaining system of hand operated locks and dams in north america, built in 1845 and still in use. There are several campgrounds in the area with full hookup. If you're interested shoot me an Email and I can help you make a reservation. We'll even act as guides if you'd like us to show you around. My wife and I are both from big cities, and we love it here. We're proud of our "Just the right size" town and always glad to show visitors around. Casper Mariettacasper@hotmail.com |

I only live fifty miles away in Spencer, WV and never knew all this about Marietta. Thanks for the info. Guess I will have to do some exploring. We are in Marietta several times a year for shopping or visiting the Polaris dealer. Richard BTW, one of the bus nuts groups had a rally last summer at Marietta during a steam boat regetta I believe. |

Well howdy neighbor. I remember that rally, there were a bunch of the big suckers here for a while. Nice people. I've been following the story of your truck on here for a while, and I'm sorry about your loss. As for me, I'm a wanna-be skoolie nut, and I've been following this board to learn learn learn. I'm saving my pennies and hoping to buy something big and yellow with a stick shift soon. I know a lot of this group isn't big on skoolies, but given my budget and the fact that a lot of the places I want to go aren't paved, a skoolie is a good choice for us. We're younger, our kids are tough and my wife loves a clutch pedal even more than I do. This'll be fun and I can't wait to get started. Next time you're coming to Marietta shoot me an Email, I'll tell your where the REAL best restaurant in town is, then I'll meet you there for coffee and a wimpy burger. I have been to your town for two of the Stern wheller festivals. That was two very good trips. I am a member of the Convereted Coaches of The Eastern Area. We was at the fair ground. We had a problem with the people getting the rides tore down and moved so we could get to the hook ups. It is a very nice town and I would recommend it to any one. |

Hi Earl, The sternwheel festival is the weekend after the county fair, and the carnies hadn't moved out yet. Sorry about that. Glad you liked our town. My wife is from Chicago and I'm from Newport News VA, and we think Marietta is just the right size. We're big enough to have some places to shop and a bit of a nightlife, but still small enough that everybody knows the mayor (his name is Joe) and we almost never have traffic problems. Come see us again soon, Casper |
