My 6v92 TA is in Vee drive configuration and so runs left handed. Will the 24v, gear-drive alternator work in a right hand engine? I searched the archives and found no reference to alternator direction.

Thanks for any help.

I believe an alternator doesn't care wich direction it spins. If it has been in service running the other direction the brushes on the stator may have taken a set. The rectifyer should convert to dc running either way. The bigest indicator of intended rotation is a cooling fan if air cooled.

If I am not mistaken that will be a blower not a cooler because of the directional fan like Brice was saying.

FWIW....
In my time I have seen the evidence of many a water-cooled mechanic's missed assumptions...namely mounting a Std. Chevy Alt. on a Corvair, which happens to turn the opposite direction from most engines.
The Alt. will put out the expected voltage BUT the cooling fan's fins/blades are aimed the wrong direction, pulling air thru instead of PUSHING it thru.
The swap usually has a shorter service life because of this failure to use the correct fan.
With the proper directional fan you'll have the problem nipped at the bud..!

If it's the 50DN alternator it doesn't have any brushes either.

I can settle this....
Automotive alternators go 'round and 'round.... as opposed to up and down or inannout!

When is a GM owner going to say that the cams and blower drive turn right on left handed engines, and only the crank is backwards?

Thanks for the oil cooled crack LB, I liked it!

On a V block 2 stroke Detroit, no matter what rotation the engine is doing, the rear gear drives are always rotating the same direction. Since they drive the blower-it only operates one direction. So the answer is, yes the 50DN works on either left or right rotation engine since it is running the same way no matter what. Good Luck, TomC
