HI I am contemplating buying an older (1994) GM 1/2 ton pick up truck as a toad. Its 4 wheel drive, automatic trans, lever operated transfer case. The toad charts don't go back that far, does anyone have any experience with the older trucks? Will I have any problems? Need any additions prior to towing? Thanks Jim |

It is probably ok. I think they used a New Departure transfer case and all NPs are ok for towing to the best of my knowledge. BTW I do not guantee this info. |

Call REMCO, they should be able to look back and see what you need to tow. http://www.remcotowing.com/ |

You might think that a 4x4 GMC with a stick shift tranny could be flat towed, well my '79 GMC couldn't and that had a NP transfer case. As far as I can remember, some of the permanent 4x4 autos could be, but better find someone who actually knows. It is not down to what trans is installed, it is how the bearings on the output shafts are lubed. If they rely on oil being thrown about by the imput and mainshaft clusters, then they will run dry if this oil supply is not there. Check into Warn freewheeling hubs, they have a range for rear wheels now, not sure if they go as big as a 1/2 ton but they cover most of the smaller 4x4 vehicles. Just hook up and switch the front and rear hubs and off you go. Failing this, Remco driveline disconnect and switchable front hubs and you're good to go. Peter. |
