Last time I was under the bus with the engine off and 120 psi applied to the air system, I knowticed air was flowing out of the engine breather. The schematic doesn't show air routed to the engine crank case. Whats with that?

Sounds like a reed valve in the compressor might be bad. This would allow compressed air to return into the compressor and bleed through the compressor rings back into the engine. Could be time for a rebuilt aircompressor.

I think it's time for a rebuilt compressor.

I didn't think of that. I have on the shelf a rebuild kit for the compressor top end. That would include everything but the rings and bearings. Cost about $40. I think I will try that first. Alot less work too.

But would the air bleeding through the compressor rings back into the engine indicate the rings are shot too?

Thanks, Hopeful-Joe

No,the air would leak into oil galleries and then out the breather tube.

Sorry I misunderstood the question.Thought you ment engine rings.New answer,Probably. You are better off just replacing thr compressor.

When the rings are shot you get oil in the air tanks.

I agree with Geoff, and if your tanks and air dryer are oil free I'd probably rebuild the top end only, if I had the parts to do so.

Although, if I didn't have the parts on hand, I buy a rebuilt compressor.

Even the tightest rings will bypass some pressure, which is why crankcases need to be vented.

Sounds like it could be the check valve between the compressor and the wet tank. If it is leaking air from the supply tanks flows back to compressor and then past the rings.

I'd replace that check valve FIRST
