I read somewhere that CNG buses can't be governed. Anyone know why that is? If a diesel can be governed why can't a CNG? |

Well, we do not have anything over a half ton truck with CNG, so I'm not familiar with heavy duty diesel installations. With that said, it should be a simple matter to set up the DDEC ECM to limit fuel delivery above a set RPM... in other words govern the engine that way. Brian |

I'm not sure of the various engines involved, but all of the CNG buses in Las Vegas,NV and Ft. Myers,FL have governors on them. Installing a governor on any engine is not hard to do, although it can be rather expensive. ...JJ |

the electronically controlled fuel-injected gas engines use the computer as a "governor".... the only gas engine in an automotive application ive ever seen that had a governor was a 392 international... in a 1800 series single axle truck....my reasoning diesel engines have a governor is because of the way a fuel injection system is designed....a precice amount of diesel is injected... as opposed to a gas engine.. which would be "free choice".. the air fuel ratio changes with the amount of vacuum....a diesel meters its fuel 1 way or another.. scroll pumps...sleeve metering... |

Many older gassers are governed. The 1972 F-800 at work tops out at 3600RPM. |

Diesels are governed to keep them from coming apart because of all of the rotational mass. Same thing with any large engine, no matter what fuel it runs on. Governors were also used on fleet vehicles to keep the drivers from overrevving the engines or speeding. Sometimes the vehicle is deliberately geared low so that maximum service speed is achieved at engine red-line. |
