We are putting down the new floor on our AM General. We were wondering two different things. They are: 1. Should you treat the underside of the 3/4 tongue and groove plywood? 2. We plan to use 3/4 inch then some questionable type of insulation/sound barrier, then nice 1/2 inch plywood on top. Does that sound correct, and suggestions as to what type of insulation to use. We are trying to stay on our budget. Yeah right!!!! Thanks, Tony & Kim |

I sprayed my floor where it is exposed to the road with automotive undercoating. Then I put the questionable insulation/sound barrier material from Home Depot, then put 3/4" T&G. Over that we put Formica Flooring. --Geoff '82 RTS CA (what budget?) |

It's some 4x8 pressed fiber material sold at Home Depot in the insulation department. It is made to lay on the subfloor and have another floor put over it. They call sound reduction board or something like that. It may not be available in your local Home Depot, we get it here in N. California. |

I've heard of folks putting tarpaper between the layers of plywood to keep cockroaches from coming through the floor. Apparently they hate the stuff. Never did find out if it works. |

I plan to use the same thing I used on the roof, Kool Seal for the same reasons; to seal out moisture and to reflect road heat. |

The product Geoff used is brown and fiberous.Homesote is gray and cardboard like.My Home Depot had both.I used Homesote because I've used it for years as a sound deadner, and it works fairly well. It's probably not as good as some of the hi-tech stuff, but the price is right, and it is available everywhere. I am not sure about putting anything that can absorb water in the floor. What happens if you get a leak? Will it expand and fall apart like that chipboard stuff they make the furniture out of. I am considering closed cell insulation board such as Super Tuff-R as it may not absorb water. But first I am going to put a piece in water and see what happens. Peter. |

Put a piece of Homesote in water also, Peter. I believe it just floats. |
