Why do you want to remove it?
Won't that leave a lot of weight overhanging the drive axle?
I have thought about it, but was concerned with the stability and driving changes this might involve?
On my Prevost the rear axle is lifted when turning in a tight spot to save dragging the axle.
It also helps when I need more weight on the drives, for soft areas or snow.
Seems to help driving by eliminating rear floating back and worth as does my 4106.

My question is why remove it? I've seen where some want to remove them, my question is why and what do they gain?

Larry -

If you re-read his post, he's trying to remove the tag axle for servicing, as it's "frozen" in place. I didn't interprete his message to mean that he's removing it permanently.

Your right.
But I have seen others remove them so I just got a little ahead of myself.

Why do they remove them and what as I questioned would be the out come?

I know you have been around them for sometime so I'm glad you replied, can you clue me in on the above questions?

Sometime back someone had posted a link as to his removal progress, something about gain'g space for battery bank or the like.

I think this is what you are talking about. As you can see this one can be removed for more bay storage.>>>http://n6ecv.net/4905Aconv.html

Ed,
That must be it, wonder if tag was infront of drive (which of course it wouldn't be a tag)axle, or how it was set up?
Thanks,
Larry

Removing a tag will save a bunch of weight , and make the coach handle better in the slippery stuff.

BUT the Fed highway law weight limits per axle will require a very lightweight conversion , and perhaps some reduction in load to stay legal.

All to the better,
as light weight coach gets up hills as fast as the 500hp defulers (withput the cost in engine life), handles better and stops better.

Drive it over a scale after tossing the tag , and see what you have to play with.

Whoa... Fred, It might be a nice idea to lose the weight, but the design of the frame in a two axle coach is different than a three axle.

The location of the drive axle on a 96A2 is closer to the where tag axle is on a 96A3, even the engines in the two coaches is shifted.

Removing the tag axle would create an enormous weight shift onto the drive axle, and over the long run would probably over-stress the uni-body frame too.

But, I think and hope that it is a moot point, I believe that Larry is rebuilding his tag axle, but running into rust in trying to get it out.
