Check out what the company Astron has. They have equipment to do 24 vdc to 12 vdc, 12 vdc to 120 vAC along with a converter to let one run a negative ground radio in a positive ground vehicle. http://www.astroncorp.com |

An electrically savvy friend converted the 6 dash idiot lights on my Prevost from 24V to 12V by adding resisters, bought from Radio Shack, to the individual lamp wires. A cheap/easy solution and it works fine. Should work as well on the power line to the radio. |

I would not use resistors on a radio. The radio does not provide a constant load, therefore the voltage would vary. I can assure you this will fry your radio. If you need 12 volts it is best to run an equalizer which allows you to take 12v from the center of your two batteries in series and still keeps both batteries balanced. There are several of these on the market. If the only 12volt item is the radio, run a wire to the center of your two batteries, fuse this properly and don't worry about it. Jojo |

2 Dogs is right. If there is 12 volts somewhere close, then use it. But I assume from your query that you did not find any. Hence my recommendations stand. Jojo |

Simpson is the brand name of an electrical multi-meter. No, you won't find them at HF. Arguably the best ever made, although there are several other brands that are as good. |

Sorry about the resister comment - if I was wrong. I admit I'm no elec expert. No doubt there are many expensive solutions, but if economy is an issue, what about just powering off the house batts? |

If you have not purchased the converter, consider putting the money in an equalizer (Vanner). It will cost you about three times as much, but does a different job and extends battery life, while allowing you to draw 12 volt loads off a 24 volt system without doing the batteries and charging system any harm. |
