Read a recent article in Pro Boat builder that had some good but counter intuitive (at least for me) information.

We all know that pumps push far better than they lift , so on contemplating a fuel polishing setup , it would be assumed the pump should take from a tank , push it thru a filter bank and then return it to the same tank.

NOT SO according to PBB , the pumping action will mix the fuel and water so well that the filter will NOT be able to pull most of the water out.
The particles may stay in the filter , but not the water.

Their recommendation was to suck the fuel thru the filter and pump it to where desired.

On thinking about my 8V71 that is exactly how Detroit D & GM built it almost 40 years ago.

The fuel is sucked thru the primary , sees the fuel pump then goes thru the secondary and on to the engine.

Guess if it worked for every DD engine in the world its OK to copy for our use to clean a gunky fuel tank.

Fred that's how the cummings triple nickel was set up on my sailboat as well. Suck from the belly tank throught the Racor then to the secondary's and to the motor then return to the side tanks which drained back to the belly

When doing dialysis on fuel tanks it is imperative to pull through the filter first, if for no other reason than to keep the crud out of the pump. Usually, self-priming pumps pull better than they push, vice-versa for other types. Shell design may determine this also, but diaphragm types are not included. ...JJ
