I've been working on the VW Cabriolet lately. Bummer in the 7th degree, lol.

We had to have it towed home the other day after it quit running. My diagnoses was that the old belt to the alternator wasn't giving enough grip to let it charge, then when the battery got low, the regulator would call for charging and the alternator would go into locked rotor mode because it couldn't turn with the demand and it did get enough grip from the old belt to cause Cat to miss her gear shift and kill the engine. She said she smelled smoke, but when I looked, all I could find was a worn out belt. No wiring or other important stuff.

So, fast forward to today. ZZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!:

We ordered belts from Napa the other day, and since it's been an unknown number of miles since the timing belt and tensioner were changed, we ordered those also.
This morning I started the dismantling of the belts..... 3.5 hours of ridiculous welds to hold what a single bolt would have taken care of, (the PO had welded the AC, and PS adjustments in place). Then I find I need to remove the PS pulley in order to remove the crank/AC/WP belt. Another hour of chiseling welds off the pulley where the bolts that hold it are, and I find the pulley is thin enough on one side to make a French run-way Super model look chunky. We ordered a pulley from Napa. Except...... They didn't have it in their system. So I went online and found it... on their website. Sent Cat back down to pick up a 6mm Allen Socket and she also ordered the new pulley, when they brought up the part number I found online, Voilą There it was! Son of a gun... whuda thunk!

Now to remove the crankshaft pulleys. That will be a job for tomorrow. Hopefully, the new Allen socket will be better than the old Snap-on socket. I twisted it about half in two and the bolts never budged! I could hear the rear brakes squealing though since I had to pull up the emergency brake to keep the engine from turning while I applied torque!

Gotta love Fahrvergnügen!

Why would tho PO have welded all that stuff up? Are they subject to loosening?

So, now I must confess to a despicable PO act. We once had a little Suzuki Samuri and the A/C clutch failed. When I tried to remove the clutch, I broke the end off the A/C compressor. What to do???

Since we live in Florida, I just J-B welded the whole thing back together, permanently engaged clutch. I wonder what the next owner thought about that when the A/C needed work.

Ha I'm in the middle of doing that on a VW 2.4D engine....quite fiddly. As yours is a gasser I hope it is easy. Mine requires a special tensioning tool as there is no tensioning pulley, just a shiftable water pump for timing belt tension. VW makes very long lasting motors though so I am not complaining, also there are lots of resoursces on line as the brits mod these engines none stop...one day I will put a 1.9 TDI in my van....amazingly it will go faster with less fuel, the 1.9 TDI is maybe VW's best engine if properly cared for.

This is my ride...it is a Volvo...I drive the hell out of it, but unless I get a running start everyone beats me off the line....still I catch up eventually.

If Volvo made a midsized diesel van available in Canada I would have one. FWIW US/Canadian protectionism (tariffs etc) make it impossible for commercial vehicles to be imported here at a decent/competative price.

Marvin I have log less than 3,000 on my bus towing the brick. and besides she does not register towed miles. electronic odometer so SORRY those are her true miles and she wears them with pride, Tim that is true the engines are very overbuilt and under stressed that "was" Rolls Royce philosophy as well hence they never stated horse power and when asked the answer was adequate to propel the car. Patrick she is beautiful and sporting my al time fave colour as well.

Yeah, Joe... same here. I've had about 5 bugs and Micro buses over the years and 3 or 4 Golf/Rabbit/Cabriolets mixed in also.

Good news! The timing belt is in place, and the sprockets are in some semblance of correct timing. Ended up having to remove the #1 spark plug to make sure of TDC since the timing hole in the bell housing is impossible to look into, it's covered by sixty kazillion hoses that aren't meant to move.
I had to quit for the day since my hip and knees are giving me fits. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the rest of it back together and fire it up.

I repeat.... Gotta love Fahrvergnügen!

Best conversion I saw was a 350 Chevrolet Camaro engine installed in a Volvo station wagon (the more square one). The owner simply loved the performance and after looking at the installation looked like it belonged. Plus-he still got over 20mpg when he wasn't having fun with it. Good Luck, TomC

Tom when I lived in S FL there was one of those that used to frequent Moroso, the local drag strip. It was callled The Heartbeat of Sweden and as I recall would pull 12's in the quarter mile

Tom, I'm trying to talk Don into helping me turbo a Cat C1.1 and then build an adapter plate for the transmission.
Just think, it would be one of the few, if not the ONLY Cat powered Volkswagen Cabriolet in the world! LOL

Dalles

Much easier to find a 1.5 vw turbo diesel and just bolt it in place. No reengineering required. much easier in the knees and hips and especially the brain.
If you were a little closer I would give you a NA vw diesel. It sang a sweet song when I pulled it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one addicted to diesels!
I have the bus(diesel,of course), and the TDI Jetta with all the bells and whistles, and now a 2.8L Common Rail Diesel Jeep Liberty. My only gas engines are in the lawn mower and the vw kit car I started 15 years ago and haven't finished yet! Maybe I should convert it to diesel too!

Bud...
all you need now is one of those Diesel powered airplanes..!
REALLY!
http://www.planeandpilotmag.com/aircraft/pilot-reports/cessna/diesel-skylane.html
the higher they go up - - -
the MORE power they develop !!
Maybe you need more room than a converted Cessna?
Try THIS page for something bigger

Diesel powered aircraft go back almost to WWI.

They were very common in the 1930's in Germany.

That Skylane sounds neat. We have some Diamond diesel twins at my local airport. The only drawback to the engines are at overhaul its cheaper to replace than rebuild.

Well, after a bunch of parts, Fahrvergnügen, aka: Mudflap, aka: POS, is running again, although not the way I want it to.
When DW saw smoke coming through the firewall, it apparently fried a bunch of stuff.
Ignition control module:
From Napa, $171
From Rockauto.com, $40 (guess where we bought it?)
ICM was bad, burned contacts, obvious signs of extreme overheating, the potted area was cracked and weird looking when I removed it from the heat sink.

Ignition Coil:
From Napa, $121
From Rockauto.com, $34 (guess where we got it).
The coil was bad... it showed continuity between the tower and the body, plus was completely out of spec for the vehicle.

Finally got a decent spark to the spark plugs, which had been showing a very small yellow-red spark, but now is brilliant blue-white.
Still no joy in German toyland.

Checked all the electrical again, wasn't getting power through the fuel pump relay to power the transfer and main fuel pumps. Checked the fuse, it was good, but I changed it anyway. Checked the relay, it wasn't working when I put power to the contacts but when I put it back in the slot, it worked fine. pumps are running.
Still no happy dance.

Went back to beginning.
Check timing on the cam/aux/crankshaft pulleys. About a half cog off. OK, So am I!

Then by chance, I looked at the new Bentley Publishers manual for the Cabriolet that I just got... Voilą! the timing marks that I had been using from my online Mitchel manual and the Napa instructions that were in the timing belt box were not just wrong, they were REALLY WRONG! About 60° wrong.
The Cam timing mark is on the BACK of the pulley, not the little spot on the front that you can see.
The other manuals show a picture of that front mark lining up with the valve cover.... it ain't so, Joe! It's actually the mark on the back of the pulley and lines up with the valve cover. Such a deal.

Little horse apple fired up within a half turn of the engagement of the starter... Woo~Hoo!

Tomorrow will be putting it all back together. Another plus, a feller stopped by about 15 minutes ago and is interested in owning it for his newly drivers licensed son.
It never rains in Texas... it just plops down all at once!
