"I'm extremely disappointed that this carrier was allowed to continue operating unsafely when it should have been placed out of service for the benefit of its passengers and other motorists," LaHood said in a statement to USA TODAY. The statement rebukes the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the DOT agency in charge of bus and truck safety, for not shutting down Sky Express of Charlotte before the crash, despite a history of safety violations. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2011-06-01-bus-crash-lahood_n.htm?csp=24 Remember when bus companies used Markel Insurance, and the insurance company had unmarked cars watching us drive, etc? We didn't need "CDL", or state agencies, we did things to insure the safety of our passengers, because it was the right thing to do. Oh well... |

Doesn't if give you a warm fuzzy feeling just knowing that our leaders are so knowledgeable in so many areas and so willing to protect us that know nothing from ourselves. If it wasn't for the great oversight we get we might even be driving 40 year old buses to campgrounds or even worse, concocting all kinds of ways to customize them in ways that the original designers never dreamed of,, we should all be thankful for them and let them know how much we value their input. yep that warm fuzzy feeling is a sight to behold. |

We are such a small group that we are under the Washington radar. If we were visible on the highway (You don't often see an old retired coach on the road) or there were a bunch of accidents related to our buses you can bet we'd be outlawed. |

Dan - "we might even be driving 40 year old buses to campgrounds or even worse, concocting all kinds of ways to customize them in ways that the original designers never dreamed of" I guess raising the roof a foot or more, adding a slide-out, and changing the engine to a newer, heavier, high-torque model the frame was never designed to handle, is a real blessing. I hate regulations. However........ For us....individuals... -no- regulations have a minimal impact when things go wrong. But for companies that mass produce and/or operate vehicles that will be carrying up to (or more) than 60 lives aboard, and on the road daily for countless miles? No regulations would allow inherent greed to disregard safety issues for the sake of the almighty dollar. I think that's why there are regulations to begin with; in a perfect world, we wouldn't need 'em. (just sayin') |

All things in moderation, even too much sex can be bad for the heart. Any thing can be overdone, even regulation or governmental involvement, in my mind we do live in a 'perfect world', please don't burst my bubble or wake me up while I'm having a good dream, I'm slowly sliding back into the childhood that I so desperately miss. Thats why when I want to go fishing, I grab my fishing pole, when I want to go swimming I head for the lake,, I'm tired of being an adult all my life, I retired and now I'm almost moved into the anti-KOA,, I want to kick off my shoes and walk on the grass. |

Cody, When someone asked Paula if I was in my second childhood, her reply was "are you kidding?, he is still in his first childhood, he has never grown up!" And that the way I want it, I plan to be a kid till the day I die. Jack |

Was it that long ago that people could be trusted to use common sence? I remember when michigan didn't have a set speed limit, the rule was to drive according to conditions and if you ran it into the woods you would be cited for driving to fast for conditions, now we're not only told what to do, we're told when to do it, when did we give up the ability to think for ourselves. My warm fuzzy feeling is going away. |
