Hi people, I own a 1966 TDH4519 w/ 6v71 and a 2 speed allison that has been sitting for 10 years. It fires right up, air pressure steady at 110psi and it appears the parking brakes are releasing but it wont go in gear. the lever throws stiffly either direction and a very unpleasant grinding starts and stops when you move the lever back to neutral. On the advise of a friend I checked the bleeder valves. There are 2 solenoids on the top of the transmission and only one of the bleeders above them will not produce any fluid when opened. I tested both solenoids by giving them 12v with the bus shut down and both sounded like they were functioning. this bus was driven into the spot its in right now. so I dont think its serious but I know nothing about detroits and I cant afford a manual for this thing right now. The spot its parked in makes it extremely difficult to get under it. I would appreciate any help you folks could give me. coach number 1350 bus number 572 info on its shipping date I found at http://www.omot.org Ohio museum of transportation website the production list for tdh4519s is here. http://www.omot.org/roster/GMList/tdh4519.html Dave |

Know it sounds crazy, but see if you can place the tranny in drive, then see if the engine will start. On the older 2 speeds you had to stop the engine to place the tranny in reverse, then restart it. Same for drive position. Good luck. |

i've got the same transmission that youve got.... plus i got a service manual for it also.... if the engine is idling above 350 rpm, the trans will gring, trying to go in gear.... i know this sounds slow, but the 671 will do it...if you can get the rpm's down, it will shift... my 5105 has been siting for 6-7 yrs....before i bought it...email me at jimcat2@webtv.net if you need more info... |

Hello. I'll lend my support to this seemingly incredulous advice. The old two speeds were famous for refusing to go into gear. This is where the old bus driver's habit of always leaving a running bus in gear, and holding it with the parking brake came from. Once it's in gear, thank the god of your choice, and don't take it out again! If you put it in neutral, it might not go back in, and then you'd catch heck for disrupting the service. And the habit lingers on, since a new bus driver looks to the grizzled veteran for the example to follow, not neccessarily to their trainer... What says you, RJ? happy coaching! buswarrior |

I had a 5301 with the VH transmission also. I wired a momentary switch for a neutral selenoid bypass in mine. That way I could start the engine in forward or reverse. Most of the time once it was running I could switch to the opposite gear in one swift motion. The Vs2-8 I had also had the same condition. I am told that the trans originally had a brass cone somewhere deep in the transmission, that would slow down the shafts in order to shift into and out of neutral. These apparently wear out very quickly, and so many old Allison V-drives have the same problem. My cheap fix may work for you also. |

First off I would like to thank those who replied for such a fast response. I started my fishbowl in gear and it wants to move however, I have discovered the throttle is stuck so I guess I get to grab a shovel and dig enough to get under it and find where its hanging up. (I've been told this could be a one piece cable the length of the bus and I sure hope not) I'll keep my progress posted on my conversion . also if anyone knows where to get a service manual for this bus cheap please email me frndlylion@yahoo.com many thanks again bus nuts !!! BW, In 1976, at the end of August, coming out of the loop at the Ex, my two-speed Fishbowl died. I was almost straight across Dufferin St. A "grizzled veteran" Inspector came over to the bus where I frowned and shrugged my shoulders. I told him I tried to re-start the bus (for the first time in my career) by putting it in neutral. The bus had started but wouldn't go back into gear. I'll paraphrase the Inspector, rather than quote him: "Please excuse me while I attempt to assist you in getting your bus going again, young man". He placed his foot against the shift lever, shoved it forward with all his weight until it was grinding to beat the band. He reached over me and turned the bus off while the tranny howled in the background. While the engine wound down, it came to a shuddering stop, shaking the whole bus - crush load of 120 pax, and all. He then restarted the bus, as usual, and low and behold, there it was, back in gear! He "politely" asked me NEVER to do that again with a look that would have frozen Forrest Gump's heart, and asked me to carry on. What a nice, caring man he was, I thought to myself! If anyone doesn't know the significance of a late August afternoon at the Ex, please visit http://www.theex.com. And, F-Lion, if you "can't afford a manual for this thing right now", you'd best come over here and sit down beside Uncle Ian, because I have another little short story about this hobby that might surprise you... The more I hear about adventures involving the VH, the more I love my V730. |

What I'm wondering, why not just shut down the engine and wait until everything in the back stops spinning before putting it in gear? If I remember correctly, on the VH the only "gears" are the reversing gear. The actual "shift" is just the hydraulic coupling locking up. Seems to me it would be very abusive of the equipment to try to jam it into gear when the engine is running. |

hahahahahahaha! That's a great family rated version, Ian! Nose to tail crush loaded buses for hours on end taking folks in and out of the grand old "Ex". Be caught and held responsible for disrupting that operation by an old time Inspector, and you might think firefighting looks like a safer occupation.... happy coaching! buswarrior |
