I want to add a 12 volt alternator to charge my battery bank on my conversion bus. I need to find or make a bracket to go on the 8V71 engine. I am pretty new to this and I have never seen a second alternator mounted, but I have read a lot about it being done. Hopefully one of you can tell me how to do it. Or where to get the bracket to mount it and maybe send me a picture or two of what it looks like when mounted.

I am going to put a G.M. one wire alt. on my 8v71...there is a double shive pulley on the front of my engine, with space for it ,below the shive...the bracket will have to be made...try finding an old hot rodder...somebody that is used to makeing brackets ...I very strongly suggest a G.M. one wire.(has reg. built in ,very simple hook-up ...one # 8 wire...goes to battery...

i extended the blower drive... put a 2 groove pulley on it... mounted the delco 27si above the right rear head....depending on the model of bus you have, this might work... and you can buy factory brackets to do this....its the way it was done in trucks....btw, i removed the huge delco oil-cooled alternator... and covered that hole up...

Looks like I am going to have to go with the VAnner dc to dc converter because I can't find the space on my engine these guys are finding.

Thanks for the help folks! Nice to have a forum for getting other ideas!

If you have a belt drive alt for your 24v like I do. A peice of angle iron bolted to the lower bracket on the 24v will give you a nice bracket for your 12v line if up with one of the other belts remove that belt and get a new belt that goes from the 24v alt to the 12v alt. very simpleand works great I still have the road heat and air and never had problem charging or with belts sliping with one less belt on the 24v alt.

Yeah, TwoD he does, but it's probably a lot easier to rig a belt from one of the pulley shivs on the 24V alternator, than it is to rig one up to run from the shiv on the engine.

The problem is, instead of having two belts running one 24V alternator, Rick now has ONE belt driving TWO alternators.

And the problem with that is... if the belt going to the 24V alternator breaks, for any reason, you lose both!

My suggestion to you Rick, if you are commited to this set-up, would be to replace the 24V alternator belt every year or so depending on how much you use the bus and the condition of the belt.

While you are changing the belt and the 24V alt is able to spin free, try to spin the 24V alt by hand as fast as you can with one good twist and listen for unusual bearing noises, replace the alternator if you hear any, or if you feel capable, replace the bearings at the very least.

AND always keep a spare belt on hand

Brian
