Has any one taken off their 22.5 steel rims and put on Alcoa 24.5's. There are a lot of 24.5 Aluim rims in my neck of the woods, but very few 22.5's. What would be the pro's and con's of doing this...I know that a 22.5 has a higher load rating.

I haven't done it, but have discussed this with those who have. Soooss...

If you have the additional wheel well clearance AND if your speedometer reads a little slow,...

...then going to a slightly taller tire may help you. The Alcoa wheel has plenty of...

...capacity for a coach application. Also going to a heavy truck sized tire...

...may be $cheaper$ than the expensive 12 inch wide bus tires. Good luck.

I have the room and a electronic speedo that can be recalibated...is there a problem with not get the load rating out of 24.5 tires?

Ron -

Don't know several factors with your bus, but I'll use mine as an example to see if this will help answer your question:

My 4106 came set up from the factory as follows: 60 mph @ 1650 rpm with tires that turn 495 revs/mile. (Four-speed manual V-drive transmission, 0.808:1 bevel gear ratio, 4.125:1 rear axle, 3.33:1 overall effective ratio, fwiw.)

Installing wheel/tire combination that turns LESS than 495 rev/mile will give slightly more top speed, slightly better fuel mileage (moot point), and will have a small effect on hill-climbing ability (you'll have to shift down a little sooner, basically).

Installing a wheel/tire combination that turns MORE than 495 rev/mile will have the opposite effect.

If you go to several of the major truck tire manufacturer's online catalogs, you'll find load inflation tables. Comparing an 11R24.5 truck tire (which is slightly taller and narrower) to a 12R22.5 "bus" tire, you'll see that there is a difference in the load capacity. This may, or may not, be an issue for you, depending on how heavy your rig is.

Which leads me to. . .

. . . You MUST weigh your coach, with a reading taken for each axle, to properly set your tire inflation pressures for the best wear, ride, safety & handling of your vehicle. Not to mention finding out if you're actually overloaded!! Again, these load inflation charts are available on most of the truck tire websites.

Will the 24.5 Alcoas work on your coach? Technically, yes. But it's your choice. . .

Ron,

Also remember that you have to replace your wheel studs on the front axle and if you are going to run alco on the inside on the back you will also have to replace the wheel studs on this axle. This is a "hidden" cost on the coversion over to alcos.

Sorry must not have woken up yet, don't for get the tag axle. You will also need to replace the studs on it.

It may be a good time to get the brakes done also because they have to pull the drums off to install the new studs.

BTW... You will need two sets of front alcos. One set for the the stear axle and one for the tag axle.

Thanks Ron..all good points. It's the weight issue that I was wondering about. I will wait until I can weight it when I have finished the conversion. I have an 82 Prevo so it should come in around the same weight as Larry's MC 7
