In three days I have to take my bus from Las Vegas to Phoenix. Since I will have an Australian friend on board who's never seen the country, I'd love to show her the dam... plus that path is a lot shorter. I checked the Hoover Dam hotline 1-888-248-1259 and it says RV's are now allowed to cross again BUT due to 9/11 restrictions the RV must be "easily inspectable" in order to do so. The recording goes on to say that if my RV is not "easily inspectable" that I should instead take the long-cut and not even show my face there. Anyone have experience with the Hoover checkpoint and how much hassle they will give an old converted '62 Crown? Or should I just take the long way? gary |

Gary, I only live down the road from the Dam, well about 60 miles actually. The only RV problems I have heard of are that if you have bays full to the top with stuff, they may want you to pull some of it out so they can see. Apart from that, it normally is just a walk through the RV and the random opening of a closet or two. That's all I have heard them do. Ofcourse it can change with the attitude of the RVer too. They searched an open pickup in front of me and let me go through with a pickup with shell on and it full to the top with foam board. I could have had a huge bomb hidden inside of all that, so go figure. You gonna stop by on your way through for a visit? Drop me an email off group and I will make sure to be here and even send you a map. We are literally 2 streets off the 93, 8 miles before you get to Kingman and blacktop roads all the way. Peter. |

A friend of mine went over the dam yesterday, said they never even went inside his RV. Just asked if he had any bombs, hand grenades, nuclear weapons, or weapons of mass destruction on board. He said the security guy was friendly and they were stopped for a minute at most. |

Having recently gone over Hoover Dam on an inspection tour of construction sites for the bridge that will span the canyon, I thought the security was fairly low key compared to a year and a half ago when I brought my coach home. Even then I think they had me open some of my bay doors but not all. I think it's pretty straight forward, like Peter said. I if you try to comply as much as possible with their edict to make it as easy to inspect as possible, you should have no difficulty. The best time of day is about the only other thing to ponder, either very early morning or late night will insure that there is little traffic and generally a more relaxed security force. Brian |
