Eaton makes a Hybrid that Freightliner and other truck manufacturers are using. But like all hybrids, it is only useful up to 40mph, then the Diesel engine does all the work. It is aimed at stop and go pickup and delivery like UPS, Post Office, beverage delivery, package delivery, trash truck, transit bus, etc. Good Luck, TomC |

Interesting Tom. The Volvo piece indicates that both the diesel and the electric are working at higher speeds and that the electric motor being a permanent magnet type, is also a regenerative unit so creates electricity when the engine is braking. Do you have an online link we could go to to see Eaton's system? It might be worth perusing at leisure. What are the HP ratings of the Eaton Unit? That could make a large difference. Volvo is indicating that the are getting 296US HP/221 KW, and 336US HP/250KW. That's pretty close to what most of the conversion buses we have today are doing, and could make the running of a coach even more efficient. There is also another place on the Volvo site that shows a diesel electric using the general idea of the locomotive Diesel/Electric. I thought of doing something like that years ago when I had my Old Look Transit. |
