Does anybody KNOW what the speedometer drive gear ratio is in the Spicer transmission on a 4104? Please, no theories, etc. I could determine the ratio if I could move the bus. Please e-mail me if you've got the answer. Jim-Bob |

Hi All dont know the ratio but I had problems running thru the tran. The speed went all over the place not acc. from my tran. So I went off the rear diffrental, added 4 longer bolts where it bolted togeather and a elctronic pickup all done and worked great.LOt easyer than going off front hub . |

Speedometer for a 4104. Well,According to the PD-4104 maintenance manuals one dated May 1953 and the other dated reprinted 05-60. States and I quote from both manuals that the electrical drive unit is mounted in the engine compartment and driven by a short flexible cable from the transmission speedometer drive gears. No where does it mention that the speedometer is driven from the front wheel. Section 7 page 130&132 May 1953. Section 7 page 150 reprint 05-60. Nothing is mentioned as to the drive ratio. |

Let me give a photo reference to my previous post. See section 17 which is the transmission section in the 4104 maintenance manual. On page 233 figure 6 (transmission installed)see item #7. This is the Speedometer sending unit as installed. Some of the PD-4104 had a left front wheel speedometer drive reference section #1 page #7 in the 4104 parts book with/tachograph this is the Sangamo Speedometer that mounted on the dash to the right of instrument panel. Perhaps this will help. |

Let me clarify a bit guys. You are all correct in this case. Yes, the transmission has a speedo drive just ahead of the output flange. That's the ratio I am trying to find. The 4104 can also have a speedo drive running through the front spindle. The non original front brake drums are also drilled and tapped on the inside edge. My present (non stock) speedo reads the heads of 4 bolts on the edge of the front left drum. But I bought a Datcon speedo which has an odometer (a nice thing to have) but the Datcon needs between 15,000 to 30,000 pulses per mile to function. It normally uses a sender but there are different ones for different drive ratio 16, 32 pulse (per revolution) etc. The front drum would need at least 31 bolt heads to accomplish that. So I need to figure out the drive ratio to buy the right sender. I think it will be the 16 pulse but knowing is better. I was hoping somebody had already been through this or had a transmission with the driveshaft off who could spin & count. Guess I'll have to roll the bus forward & get someone to count the revs of the drive. |
