I am getting ready to pick up the newest addition to our family (our MC-9) in a week or two and thought it would be a good idea to get an emergency road service plan. Any suggestions or recommendations? Any you would avoid? What about costs?

Find out if You can, were there towing companys are located, I have Allstate and they are far and few in between, I broke down on I-44 in Mo.and had the road partialily blocked, The State Police Officer was really helpful, but he said I had to get the road cleared NOW the nearest Allstate towing co. that could handle RV's was 125 miles away. The Officer gave me a choice of 2 local towing Co.'s to chose from to get the road cleared. Neither was Allstate approved, I had to pay, and Yes Allstate did remburise me but not with out a lot of hassle.
And while I'm here I must say , the Mo. State Highway Patrol was most Courtesus, and Helpful

I have emergency road service for my bus, with my State Farm auto Insurance, let me say I have never used it, but for what it is worth, speaking with my agent, I can call a 800 number or get a wrecker myself and bring them the bill...

Mine comes with the Progressive Insurance I got through RV Alliance. It's a bus/RV policy so there is no problem towing a vehicle that large. Takes you to nearest qualified mechanic whatever the mileage.

Coach Net, the carrier for FMCA. Unlike some of the more common road service operators, they are set up knowing that they are providing service to large RV's and buses--they don't dispatch 1 ton wreckers to tow 15-20 ton buses as I have heard of Good Sam and RRR. madbrit mentioned the Progressive Insurance one and I have a friend who has used it extensively and is very happy. They oncelow-boy'd his Eagle from near Bakersfield, Ca to a Detroit shop in south LA--2 days and a trip permit from CHP (over heighth load). The prices are all about the same (mine is $76/yr for a 3yr. contract) and worth every penny of it in my opinion.

I avoid Allstate like the plague. My daughter got hit by an Allstate-insured driver in the left rear of our Lincoln, taking out the left tail light assembly. Allstate took weeks to determine that they were responsible. I had to fix the tail light enough to make the car legal to drive. Otherwise it was "get a rental car". They finally agreed to the repairs, but stuck me in a Taurus for the over 2 weeks it was in the shop. Then they balked at paying my work at my shop rate because it was substantially over the rate they pay their own body shops ($60/hour versus $32). I told them they don't have a rate contract with me and I figured they should be glad to pay it since it was far less than several more weeks of renting a Taurus. (I do free-lance repair work, and never have had a problem getting companies to pay me for my time and trouble. One even paid me rental-car rate to let my daughter use my car while I fixed a problem they thought wasn't theirs but later I proved it was.)

Well, when I finally nailed the adjuster's boss's boss with the fact that my son-in-law is a tort lawyer who loves insurance companies (he specializes in large suits) and he told me they were being stupid, they wasted no more time getting the check out. I guess it could be called "reality therapy", but sometimes you have to play hardball. I've heard from many shop owners that Allstate is by far the worst company in the business to collect from.

So much for "good hands".

To Clarke -

Me thinks Allstate's "good hands" only refers to them holding out their palms for your monthly premiums. . .

LOL

This is only what I have been told, but that is that AAA and Allstate specifically exclude large diesel pushers from towing coverage; don't know that to be a fact. As for State Farm, you must find one that is contracted to State Farm or pay up-front and seek reimbursement. That can be a real hardship when you're looking at low-boying a bus. State Farm once haggled with me for 3 months over a $100 towing bill on my 33'Holiday Rambler that I paid up-front. I don't need that ****, so I go with a company that I can call, tell them the problem, and tell them to send somebody to fix it or tow it, with no money out of my pocket except for parts.

Ive used RRR and have had sero hassle, they are set up for LARGE vehicles, and always send the proper equipment. Toll free lines, knowledgeable operators, and more service providers than any other RV Service Co. $69.00 per year. Best road side assistance anywhere is plain old cash... and lots of it!!! Cheers...JJ

And I guess I'd be dreaming in dotcom colour to think any of them would cover Mexico.

Hi Fast Fred & Brian,

I have invited a spokesperson for RV America, which is the umbrella insurer under which Progressive belongs, to answer your messages about traveling in Canada & Mexico. The answer should be forthcoming in a couple of days and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the answer.

I have in hand my "notice of renewal" from Good Sam and it says, " Protection includes either: your RV and tow vehicle, and now all additional vehicles (such as your family autos); or a motorhome or camper.
You're protected whether you're in Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, or the lower 48 ......
Good Sam RV ERS provides claims reimbursement for covered breakdown services rendered in Mexico."

Hope this helps.

Hello Fast Fred,

I am the Progressive agent alluded to in Ian's message posted on May 4th. Yes, Progressive's RV policy does automatically cover any towing and roadside assistance expenses while traveling in Canada. Policyholders can call a toll-free number 24 hours a day. This number is provided with the policy.

Here's a minor note of correction. RV America Insurance is an 'agent' for Progressive. Thank you, Ian, for allowing me to assist your community of bus nuts.

I had Good Sam, but switched to FMCA because
they cover all vehicles (which GS now does).

I had good service from Good Sam, Crappy
(several times) from FMCA. Enough I've switched
back to Good Sam. I'd be on hold forver with
FMCA, poor communication and follow through. I
was faster finding towing myself.

I'll never use FMCA again.

I had good sams for two yrs. Needed them three times. once for flat tire on my tow car waited 1 and half hours when they showed up they didn't bring a wrench or jack. the second time they never showed up for my wife stuck in the middle of freeway in the hot texas sun. they were busy. Third time I had a bad battery out in the middle of nowhere was put on hold for over 30min. on a pay phone. had to walk 5 mi. for help. When we talked to them they talked like they didn't give a dam. If you get good sams GOOD LUCK.
