Has anyone ever "toad" an old 87'ish Toyota Van? I deliver RV's all over the country and unfortunately only get to live in them until I deliver them. This means I need a support car that I can sleep in. These vans are fairly light, but I'm not sure about trsnsmission problems, et... |

I went to Remco online and looked... they didn't list Toyota vans for their CV shaft disconnects, but they might make one for that tranny... call them and they will tell you for certain. You could probably call a Toyota service department too, someone there ought to know. Brian |

You can tow it if it has a manual transmission. If it's an automatic, you need a driveline disconnect. While you can use an electric lube pump, a pump failure could cause catastrophic damage which could really ruin your day, given what you do. These old vans are rear wheel drive and I almost ended up with one. They would work great for the road rat who needs to live in it on the road for extended periods. Just remember that maintenance on these is a nighmare and they are not the greatest highway vehicles in the world given that the engine is underneath the driver, but they have plenty of room. |

belive it or not they had a 4X4 option which would be a perfect toad with a "N" posistion on the transfer case. I looked at one about 6 months ago and almost bought it because it was so cheap and very neat but at the time I was on very thin ice with my wife for draging some other junk home so I let it go. I "toad" my 'ole 87 dodge ram van, the mini kind, by flooding the tranny with three extra qts of atf. To change from tow mode to drive, I open a valve into reservoir hung from the hood and let tranny pump the 3 qts back out, then shut valve. Van has 128k on it. 30k under tow. Tranny just lost gears 1 & 2, but tranny doc says could just be the dodge tranny's date with death and not have any bearing on the flooding technique. I tried it because the reason autos dont tow generally is due to lack of lubrication. Consulted with a tranny doc and figured the 3 qts would cover all the rotating parts. FYI, the fluid still looks good. |
