So I have ripped out all the old carpet and pad looking at the plywood floor. PO had put 1 1/2 insulation foam board down on floor walls and ceiling, no wonder Kevin couldn't hear the engine when test driving it for me.
Anyway I'm torn between carpet, wood floating floors with carpet runners or maybe even both. Wood is easier to keep clean, Carpet has the hidden dirt and the German Shepard doesn't slip all over, any thoughts on this?

Good idea Sam if you use laminate be sure to leave room enough on edges for shrink and swell, we didn't and got some swell. Also I used tile and really like it.

Tile and Lament Pergo The Depot 40.00 a box floats on foam. Run it diagonal and you don't see the seams much. Carpets a pain to put in and you always have to clean. the others just wipe up or sweep up Done.

We placed .125 cork sheets (for sound barrier) over existing 1.5 inch Marine Plywood floor..then 1/4" hardwood Parquet...carpet runners( not affixed) from front to back for walkway only.

Dogs have saddle blanket carpets here and there...easy to shake, brush and wash.

ABSOLUTELY no carpet for us...way too much hassle to keep clean with animals, sand etc.etc. BTW, same at home.:-) :-)

I agree with you RC
We had carpet on our five month trip with twenty pugs. When we got home the carpet was out near the next day. The Mississippi mud would not even shampoo out. Used the tile on some show trips and worked great not slick for dogs and wipe and run. We went from the second step to bedroom.

All you guys that are negative with carpet, let me say, its your fault, not the carpet. Its you that chose the wrong carpet for the application. You don't see a thick plush carpet in a doctors waiting room so why would you put it where all the traffic from outside hits it first. Also you don't see plush carpet in a dog kennel so how can you expect carpet to hold up against 20 (TWENTY) dogs regardless of their size.
Bottom line is, carpet will work just as good as hard surface IF you spend the money for the RIGHT product. Something you WON'T find at your bargain or surplus houses. Ours has been in the bus for about 6 or 7 years with a large hair shedding dog and it still likes as good today as day one. And to add, we don't baby it! So before you dis carpet in general, think about what YOU bought and how much it was. It DOES make a difference!

I'd like to expand on what clifford said a little, there is a major difference between engineered wood and laminate flooring,, engineered wood floors are layers of actual wood with the grains crossmatched simular to plywood where many kinds of laminate floors are pressed sawdust or particle board with a vinyle covering, if you choose the laminate variety be careful of any areas that might come into contact with water, water isn't friendly to pressed wood and will cause it to swell, engineered flooring is much more tolerant of water. Ace is right about carpeting, as in anything else you get what you pay for, a cheap product is just that, a cheap product. With the small areas in a bus to work with the square footage isn't so great as to cause a major disruptions in the flow of money lol, it'll flow quite nicely as it is so get a good product and enjoy it for many years.

I agree with Ace as far as the quality of the carpet. However, most people have animals, and the places we take our buses are very dusty and dirty. So much for the great outdoors. I like a wood or tile floor because it doesn't trap all of those materials, and it is much easier to clean. I don't have any carpet in my house and that is the way I like it. If someone loves, and maintains, their carpet in the bus, then that is what they are going to suggest. Please remember that no one has the supreme answer on this subject. It is all a matter of what you want.

Good Luck,

Mike

Ahhh, Geez, just use sawdust, blow it out every few days and replace.
Or, use gravel,
How about a bed of hot coals in the cold Northern climes? It'll keep your toes toasty warm, and you won't need socks or slippers!

Think inside the box.... a floor made of Fuller's Earth.... that was the first commercially available Kitty litter, marketed as "Kitty Litter" by Ed Lowe in 1948.

If you go with the floating floor that requires a foam underlayment, think about using #30 lb. felt instead, does a good job for a lot less $$$

Oregon is the Capital of Hemp Carpeting, we have just had 91,000 Hemp carpets confiscated about 35 miles from here. The local Sheriff is one of my customers, I wonder if I could get a good deal from him in recycling them.
Just saying that or Peanut shells....

Roy are you talking Felt as in the material or roofing felt. Thinking might do both, carpet on the sides and a wood walk way down the middle, kitchen & bathroom tile and carpet in the bedroom.

Yes Chromy
Rattlesnake is a grade going into the Grand Rhonde river, deeeeep canyon narrow road and sharp curves. Crossing the river and same going out. Road is Oregon Hwy 3 from Enterprise< OR to Lewiston, ID thru Clarkston, Wn, about 100 total miles. I drove it quite a bit going to the U of Idaho.
Won't be home this weekend, but am home most any other time. Do give me a call. Road is lots of fun to drive fast by a kid with big brass ones and no sense.
Looking forward to meeting you

I use to love playing on Rattlesnake grade.... 110,000 pounds of logs or maybe a D9 on an RGN, Shiny 290, 4X4 two stick, Jakes, and a Rosary... even though I was raised a Mormon... I wanted all the good vibes I could get!

I don't care if it rains or freezes,

So Sam what did you decide. Will it be tile , Carpet, Wood, or Rattlesnake skins?
Just wondering about your flooring. You were heading to HD or are you still there.

What about carpet on the sides with a wooden walkway in the front area, tile in the kitchen bathroom and carpet in the bedroom. With a Mahogoney wains coat on the walls with a hidden pull out table.

I just tore out all of the carpet, cheap laminate and granite tile from stem to stern. Replaced all of it with Armstrong locking laminate. It is so much better than the tile and carpet. I also replaced the tile in the entry way steps with commmercial rubber stair tread and tile. It looks great and I would highly recommend it! The easiest floor and entry to clean that I have ever seen. You can see pics at:

www.mightybus.wordpress.com

I also insulated the back wall of the bedroom above the noise maker with 2" mineral wool insulation. Others advised against it, but it was a big success and has made a HUGE difference in the comfort of the bedroom even on a hot summer day rolling down the road.
