I just got a catolog that has tire pressure monitors in it. I got to thinking that at about $250 for four of them they would pay for them selves if you kept from ruining one tire due to losing pressure going down the road. Does anyone make these things for bus tires and is it practicle/ has anyone tried it?

Nick,
Can you post a link? Are these monitors the type where a transmitter fits inside the tire on the rim and you mount a receiver on the frame?

Thanks,

Juan PD4104-148

The magazine is at work but I'll try to post a link tomorrow. The monitors look like they attach to the wheel by a "hose clamp" that goes around the entire wheel. The receiver goes in the cab I think. At least that's the only other thing I saw in the picture. It doesn't say who makes it but the magazine is STYLIN something but I can't remeber the "something". I'll get it up tomorrow.

I just looked over a DINA from Mexico city ( owned by the the band WALKING.) Were on there way from Florida to California. 1976 Dina, they had a tire monitoring system that attached to the center hub, and with a cable/wire/hose thing went to the top of the fender. the wheel turned and the hub/cable thing stayed put, carring the pressure to a gauge at the driver. They had one for every tire.most impressive the driver could see the pressure of every tire from his gauges.Anyone else familiar with this system??

John that system is used in Europe. There are 2 systems that use a special unit on valve stem with transmitters one system must be moving to transmit the other does not. On both you preset tire pressure and it tells if it drops and has an alert on dash. Someone did a test and I think it was in Motor Home mag. and I did not see a price. ralph7

A quick search using http://www.Google.com for:
truck tire pressure monitors produced quite a few sites!

John, thanks for the site, found one that is for RV's and will work with bus 8 tire units
http://www.doranmfg.com/rvtirepressuremonitors.htm this one might be good since you don't have to remove the stem and rebalance the tires which would save some money.

Hey that system is a lot better than the one I found but here is the magazine anyhow.

Lots of neat stuff in the magazine some we can use most we can't but something to keep near the throne anyhow.

I installed the Cat-eye system on my rears. I like it. Provides one inflation point, equalizes the pressure between the two tires, isolates the tire loosing air if pressure drops below 15 psi of 120 and provides a visual indicator on walk-around showing under inflation, correct inflation, or over inflation. I check the frunt tires with the "old trusty."

I just purchased the Doran tire pressure system for my MC-7. After having a BAD experience last year with a blowout of the outside rear dual in 110 degree weather, and having the tire rip my R&M fender skirt to shreads, and even though I have RV Roadhelp Insurance, it still ended up costing me an arm and a leg - more than what this whole system for 8 tires costs. I'm not involved with this company as a salesman or anything else, but if they're all they're cracked up to be, it could be just what us busnuts are looking for. I should have my order next week, and when I get it up and running, I'll post results. I've had 3 buses in my life, but really never paid real close attention to tire pressures, but guess that bad experience was a wake-up call. Joe, the Cat-eye system you have looks good too. I think that system would have prevented my blowout last year. Take Care All. Norm

Norm,

I for one would be very interested in your results with the Doran system. That is the system that I'm planning on installing on my coach.

By the way, I think I'd change road side services if it cost you more than the 8 tire Doran system. I would have been SOL if they wanted payed on site.

Hi Norm,
I know I must be missing something here, but how do you know a set of tire pressure monitors would have prevented a blowout? Tire pressure monitors will alert you to low pressure, but how do they alert you that a tire is about to blow? I'm confused, AGAIN! Seems to happen a lot lately.
Hi Nick,
I think Norm is saying that the cost of the damage caused by the blowout was more than the cost of the monitoring system, not that the roadside assistance cost more. But, I could be wrong.
Thanks, Sam Sperbeck

Hi Guys
Just to add a few lines here - I don't really know what caused the blowout last year. The Goodyear Store here in New Ulm said it was "probably" under inflated as the tire still had over 85% tread left. You're right Sam, I'm not sure, but I DO believe that a monitoring system will go a long way to prevent MANY tire problems.

Also, Sam, what you say about the cost of DAMAGE is what I had meant, not the Road Service, which by the way was excellent, especially on a Sunday afternoon, and I didn't have to pay a cent out of my pocket either at the time or later, for that service. The high cost was for tires (my spare was also shot) and other damage to the fender skirt, plus painting, etc.

Thanks Sam, for clearing up my "not fully explained " post. Don't ever get old - your mind is the second thing to go...

Thanks, Norm

Joe
What did your cateyes cost? Can they be orderd off the net and save??
I installed a sefty-plus on my 4104 14 years ago. I always feel relaxed knowing should a front tire go, I can hold the wheel with one hand.It was a good $450,00 investment. I called them last year, they said it had a life time warrent and they would or have some one check it anytime, but that they have had to replace very few.

John, I tried to get my cateyes from the manufacture but they wouldn't play. I thought I'd install'm my self & save. From Mack they were like $200. From a truck tire shop $135 installed. I let them install'm. They are realy nice.

And low tire pressure is the leading cause for tire failure so pressure monitoring is critical to prevent blowouts, whether the monitor is a manual gage or an automatic set-up.
