If your bus/RV is over 30 years old you are allowed by law, F.S.320.086 (2a) Ancient or antique motor vehicles, to have a antique tag or F.S.320.086 (4) An historical Florida license plate that has been authenticated by the Dept. of Highway Safety Motor Vehicles. Remember we live in FLA, and though the law says we can have it, it is not true. I tried to get an antique tag on my RV and they said "nope we don't have that code in the system, you can have ANY other tag." So I went and bought a historical tag from an antique dealer from 1955 for the 1955 Scenicruiser. Guess what, "nope", same answer no code. I spoke with the supervisor, "Your RV is not a motor vehicle." I showed him the law printed off the State web site saying anything on a public roadway is a motor vehicle, he said I was "interpreting it", I was reading it word for word. Please contact you local HSMV to see for yourself. They will try to say "it weights more than 5,000lbs", nowhere in the law does it have a weight limit. I am contacting my local Reps and strongly encourage you to do the same. We need to let our voices be heard, "The squeaky wheel gets the oil." Do I need to comment about the election of 2000, no I won't even go there.
I am including a link to the Florida Statues for your reading pleasure. I am but one person and can only be heard by my area Reps but if more people in different areas say the same thing to their area Reps, democracy truly rings. Thank you for your assistance in this matter and for sharing your knowledge on this board.

Other than having a cool looking plate is there any advantage????? It's seems to me when I inquired about one of these for one of my cars there was a mileage restriction associated with it.

I have Historical on several cars and trucks (pickups). The advantage they stay with me as long as I own it, no more yearly renewals, another is insurance cost because of mileage restrictions. Disadvantage I can only drive in parades, two and from shows and to have them serviced.
I asked about the bus, if it is stock yes I could do it, if converted NO.

texas has the antigue plates... for parade use only type of travel.. and a mileage restriction... you can also use old plates on a vehicle, but i'm not sure of any restriction on those...

Here in NY, I have two 1958 GM coaches, both registered and insured as historic vehicles. They are both seated 51 passenger buses. If they were converted, however, they would have to be registered and insured as regular motor vehicles.

What I am trying to do is have a 1955 tag authenticated for a 1955 bus. There are NO restrictions for mileage or time of travel for this tag or the antique tag. The only tag that has restrictions is the one for a ancient or antique firefighting apparatus or military vehicle. How many 50 year old vehicles do you see going down the road keeping up with traffic?

F.S 320.086(3) The owner of an ancient or antique firefighting apparatus or other historical motor vehicle or trailer identifiable as a military trailer 30 years old or older which is used only in exhibitions, parades, or public display, may, upon application in the manner and at the time prescribed by the department and upon payment of the license tax prescribed by s. 320.08(2)(a), be issued a license plate as prescribed in subsection (1) or subsection (2). License plates issued under this subsection shall be permanent and valid for use without renewal as long as the vehicle is in existence and its use is consistent with this subsection.

Fast Fred
When did you have those tags? I don't see where it has changed to now say you can't.
Thanks

The lovley License Plate ladies in the Glades County office looked in their "book" and will not issue them.

If you persist when they attempt it , the computer spits it out.

FL antique plates have 0 advantages , must be renewed ext same as regular so why bother>

Anyone looking can tell the coach is not a big ugly painted square box , so can't be new.
