Does anyone know if it's possible to build or purchase a small wind turbine that could be mounted on a coach roof to produce enough electricity to charge a house battery bank while under way? Not sure if there's anything out there on the market, or if it's even possible to do. Thanks for your input. Hank '80 MCI9 |

Um... what's wrong with your alternator? Much more efficient although not as good at trimming trees as you pass by... F.Fred, aren't there a lot of wind generators avaliable for sailboats? (although at highway speeds it would probably rip em up...) Actually if you want to check out a very neat idea for generating electricity "while underway" that is very efficient and "enviro-friendly", check this webpage... http://www.hi-z.com/websit30.htm#Beijing Here's a more detailed PDF of what they're up to... basically using high tech thermocouples, extracting the heat of a class 8 diesel's exhaust pipes to generate as much as a kilowatt!! http://www.osti.gov/fcvt/deer2002/bergstrandpaper.pdf |

Seems to me that I read basicly the same question a couple years ago about sticking a fan out the car window in one of the alternate energy publications. Short answer is it will create drag and slow a car down and use more fuel than the energy gained. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. A bus MAY be another story. Dale MC8 |

This really doesn't apply to diesels - anyway, at this time - but, check this website out as they have succesfully used 12 off the shelf 12 volt batteries to power a car which COMPLETELY recharges itself to full charge, without EVER having any outside power source. I've been following this ongoing site and maybe, just maybe, someday we can do the same with our coaches. I remember years ago in school that we were taught that it was impossible to create as much power as expended (perpetual motion), but even though the inventer has had MANY death threats, he insists that this technology WILL be released to the public. To check it out go to www.tilleyfoundation.com |

Yeah, well if wishes were horses... Until they actually reveal what the "secret" is, I'm gonna yell: !!~SNAKE OIL~!!!! When are people gonna get over "free energy"! EVEN IF it were possible, we'd all soon be in a heap o' poo, because as it is we release waaaay too much energy into our environment, mostly limited because we can't afford to pay enough to waste more. If it (energy) were free, we'd go nuts and REALLY ruin the planet!! Talk about global warming... Doesn't ANYONE get this? Rant Rant.... |

The price of solar panels has about dropped in half this past year (per watt). When someone finally figgures out how to do this for a decade (a 2 decimal point reduction) most homes with solar shingles will be net PROVIDERS of energy. Then will be the next big problem of supporting all the now poor oil countries , and their vast population of uneducated kids , somehow by American taxpauperse , Again! FAST FRED |

Gawd Gary, where did you get that soap box you are standing on?? I want one, it would help me in my own ranting. ;-} Dale |

Hee hee Dale, I got me wee soap-box at a free-energy conference! Actually it does irk me a bit. My personal opinion is that as a race, we unleash and move much too much energy around without enough thought to the future of this little rock we live on. Water too. Las Vegas never used to have clouds.... Cheers Gary |

Gary you are aware that noone has ever PROVEN global warming right. Of course noone has ever disproven it either but why disprove something that isn't there? Point is noone can say that the global changes that haven't been proven are not normal for the planet since noone has been around long enough to document it. I do belive that slowly we, as a race, are going to ruin this planet but I don't belive it will be anything that hasn't happend before although we'll do it in a different mannor this time. |

If the idea is to utilize the movement of the coach you could drive an alternator off the engine, driveshaft or the transmission PTO. Otherwise consider a paddlewheel type aircatcher(Squirrel cage) that rotates in line with the wind and not 90 degrees to the wind. Use a NACA inlet and hide it internally. Hmmm. |

How 'bout in the nose of the "ship" behind a grill type cover? This board never ceases to amaze me!...lots of innovation here. Thanx, Tim and and Hank and others, and.......of course....the fellow who makes it all possible, Ian. Keep it up!!! RCB '64 Crown Supercoach (HWC) |

The idea is not new, we done it on aircraft long ago, it eliminated the need for the heavy battery and drag on the engine. Just a simple generator (alternators had not yet been invented) and you had nav lights etc. I would question that the drag uses more energy than the device produces, it don't seem that way to the casual user. |

Hey, Don....! Good to see you postin'. Tell us how it worked out on the aircraft. Was it a squirrel cage fan?... or just a "fan" blade. A while back I saw a propeller blade, from an outboard motor, (chromed and lookin' good) mounted on a trailer hitch receiver on the rear of a pickup. That thing put out some rpm's .....as long as the truck was truckin'. As he slowed or came to a stop, it did too. Interesting... RCB '64 Crown Supercoach (HWC) |

Well, it did not look like much, just a very short wooden propeller, maybe 6-8 inches long in place of the normal pulley, very little pitch. I think they were concerned with overspeeding the generator, since the aircraft was at a fairly constant 75=100 mph range. |

Just think about it, attach one to your rearend (butt), eat lots of beans, supply that energy to your brain, god knows what new energy one could come up with !!!! LOL .... Mind boggleing.... Heck with global warming, we would have a flammeable enviroment!!! (methane) ROFLOL !!!!!! |

Nick, See the latest issue of Scientific American for a great, in depth article on global warming, measuerment, consequences, causes, well thought out projections etc. No longer any doubt its happening. |

OF course the world is getting warmer , we are in a great period between ICE AGES. The Question of weather this is natural or "man Made" , and WE should be ordered by our gov's to return to a life style from 400- 10,000 years ago , or simply murder 90% of the population is the political question. YES YES! for global warming , it makes far more of the planet habitible, YES YES! for Co2 greenhouse gas , its PLANT FOOD and makes it possible to feed the Earths population . Sounds better to ME than killing off 5,000,000,000 folks! FAST FRED |
