Since the first cut was made in converting our old Eagle into the grand lady that she is, I wanted to do away with the heavy one piece, rubber hinged bay doors and replace them with side mounted hinged swinging doors. Well they are done, and in grand style. After reading Dave's book, and much Email consulting with my buddy "Vern In RI, I started on the project about three weeks ago. My health problems have been the determining factor in so many of our decisions lately, it was gratifying to be able to complete this process without having to make any unscheduled pit stops at the hospital. I constructed the basic frames out of heavy wall one inch square tubing, after fitting the first set, I constructed a "Jig" on 3/4 inch plywood to weld up the rest of the frames. All the new skin and hinges were ordered from IBP in Florida, and the latches from Austin Hardware. It was time consuming, and quite labor intensive, but well worth the effort. Now even I can can open any bay door, with no physical effort, and they look so much better. I have never been able to figure out how to post a picture on this site, but if anyone is interested in pictures, I can Email them to you. Since we never count labor as a cost, I spent $324.00 for latches,$1,666.22 for skin and hinges, $14.96 for stainless steel screws to attach the latches, $21.52 for Sikaflex adhesive, and I used rivets out of our shop supplies, so I did not count a price on them, $93.75 for one inch square tubing, and welding wire I did not count either. A total of $2120.45 out of pocket, and worth every penny. Gus Haag |
