So Sunday I opened the 2 drain valves on the air tank located in the evaporator compartment. Big oil spot now on the ground where the drain hose goes out. Question is,,, why did the oil come from the air tank? Blacker than Black!

The compressor is passing oil. The thing you need to know is how fast. Draining that tank every time you use the coach will tell you if you need to replace the compressor soon.

Often, these tanks don't get drained regularly. At this point, you don't know how long since the last time it was drained.

For what it's worth.

Sam,

Were both tanks black? The tank half on the right is the dry tank and shouldn't be too bad normally.I have the same problem with my 4107 but in the wet tank (left half) only but mine isn't black it is sort of a dark brown.

At first I suspected the air cleaner was too full of oil and oil was being sucked into the air compressor because the intake hose was oily at the top connection. (The ac intake is directly from the muffler looking gadget at the top of the engine.) I changed the air cleaner oil and made sure it was not overfilled but haven't driven it yet. I'm highly suspicious that it is the ac failing just as Tom says. I also replaced the ac intake hose because it was thin walled and soft. Since it is under a lot of suction it needs to be thick walled.

When I first got my 4104 and drained it for what was probably the first time in years it was also really black so yours may be ok once you start draining it regularly.

That is a beautiful bus, wish mine still looked original.

Thanks for the info Guys!
The PO said he had recently (?) changed the AC and it is a different color than the block.
Gus, it was mainly coming out of the left side when I opened it up, I will check the hoses and make sure they look good.
Thanks for the comments on the bus, I plan on leaving it like it is, no caps. I just pulled out the destination window and retinted the glass, if you know of anyone with a good rubber glass seal for this window mine is basically shot and is in need of new. Tail Light lenses also!

Sam, you might try your local glass shop. If memory serves, that glass can take a common locking rubber.

Good luck.

Sam -

Agree with Tom on the rubber gasket around the destination sign - it's common, and most glass shops should have access to it.

As for taillight lenses, IIRC, your coach has the large 7" diameter ones. These should be available from any school bus parts supplier in your area, or online.

Might consider changing the entire assemblies to LED. They're quite common on skoolies nowadays in this size, so the price has come down significantly. Less current draw, longer life, win-win!

FWIW & HTH. . .

Sam,

While the LED suggestion is a good one, I like the look of the original lenses, especially on an an original bus like yours.

I bought replacement lenses here:

http://www.schoolbuspartsco.com/WebPages/lightingproducts/lighting_bdbr.html

They are the "Catseye 55" lenses about 2/3rds of the way down the page, on the left.

Mohawk has the gaskets here(showing 254 of them in stock):

https://www.mohawkmfg.com/shop/part/21279/

The original gasket part# 2471215 is superseded by part# 708845
