Be very carful when sand blasting. You can warp the metal. You will have sand in everything. I would suggest you use a paint stripper. It would probably be cheaper and can be washed off with water. |

I'm using aircraft striper on mine but I'm also having to take paint off the silversides and the sand would be a bad deal there. I don't have many options. |

Before I would use sand I would get so one that could soda blast and I would be sure they knew what they where doing. |

Bud - Most folk seem to use aircraft paint stripper on their coaches. Must be thoroughly washed off, or it will remove new paint as it bleeds out from under the rivets. "Sand blasting" will definitely mar the aluminum finish on your 4104. Might check in the yellow pages for swimming pool tile cleaners - many of these guys have soda machines that use plain, industrial grade, baking soda, which doesn't seem to hurt the finish. Hi Bud, I tried using aircraft stripper on our 4106 but there were so many layers of paint that I had to scrape the softened paint and stripper off with a razor blade scraper to make any progress. After a small area I tried just the razor blade scraper without the stripper and it went so much faster than using the stripper, without the odor and waiting time for the stripper to soften the paint, that I stripped the rest of the bus, including the roof, with just the razor blade scraper. That got me down to the primer and then I used a cheap stripper from the hardware store and 00 steel wool to get down to bare metal. I changed razor blades often to keep from scratching the aluminum too much, and bought the razor blades by the 100. If you choose to try this method I would sugest you try it in an area that will be painted again as a test to see if you like the results. Please wear a respirator, or at the minimum, a dust mask as scraping with a razor blade scraper still creates a lot of paint dust. It is a tedious job no matter how you choose to do it, so be patient. Best wishes on your project. Thanks, Sam Sperbeck La Crescent, MN |

I've never heard of soda blasting. What does it amount too, what's it's primary use and what does something like that cost? I'm trying to get the paint off just the silversides for now cause I can't stand the looks of it. The guy painted the WHOLE bus with either a brush or a roller. Each to his own I suppose but I'd really like to get the silversides back to shinning!!!! |

Saw a demonstration of soda blasting, took graffiti off a stop sign without damaging the the reflectivity of the stop sign. Soda blasting uses the same type equipment as bead blasting, but uses baking soda instead of glass beads. I had an old Volkswagen soda blasted inside and out, worked great, and it's SO much easier to blow out the residue (or wash it out) than it is to get rid of bead residue. Brian |

I once saw a really neat way of removing all the paint, although I have no idea if it's commercially avaliable... I was at a military base and sitting next to a fighter plane was what looked like a gigantic strobe light. The paint on the plane was mostly wrinkled and hanging off. I asked what that was all about, and the guy said I had it right... they use a gigantic strobe light that puts out so much energy per pulse that it literally cooks the paint in one 'blast" and then it's easy to scrape off. It happens so quickly that it does zero damage to the plane's metal beneath... weird... gary |

When I did our 4106 I went to the hardware store and got cheap stripper. Sprayed it on with an old paint sprayer and rinsed it off with a pressure washer. Stripped the both sides front and rear in one day. Then took and had the roof sandbasted. Worked for me. |

Nick, it was North Island NAS in San Diego back about 15 years ago. I was just visiting the base for business reasons. |

I do not know how good it will work yet, but I just bought a sand blaster that operates with a high pressure water cleaner. I am going to try it with both sand and glass beads, and soda if I can find it. Here in WV they sell a media called Black Magic that is derived from coal, but I do not know the process. It costs about $8.00 per 100 lbs, and is available in fine, medium and course grades. Glass beads are $45.00 per fifty pounds, so I am going to do some experimenting with various media and see what works best on old trailers and equipment. Richard |
