I am "considering" changing my belt driven fan, for my radiator, to 12 Volt electric. The plus is that I would gain some HP.What are the detractions to this (if sized correctly)? Also, again "if" I do this, having the fan vent away from the engine would seem to disipate some unwanted engine heat.Since the radiator is on the street side, pedestrian traffic should not be affected. Any thoughts????????

This subject has been debated before many times, I suggest you check the archives and make up your mind from all the previous discuusions.

Most know that it will not work due to the size of the fan required would not be practical, however there was at least one who is going to do it and we are still awaiting his test results..... We know who they are.......... LOL.

And...if you are like me and do not know how to access the archives (since I am computer illeterate) here is the deal...

...My Coach has a big fan driven by two very big (huge) belts off the crankshaft of the mill. The belts must draw 30 hp or sooss to turn the blades.

These are necessary to pull enough air thru the radiator to cool the engine on a very hot day pulling a very steep grade going very slow.

A 30 hp or soosss electric motor would be HUGE, along with the big necessary alternator or gen set REQUIRED to run the electric motor.

However...some well engineered applications get away with an electric motor running the radiator fan, like in some of the new cars.

My VW Rabbit Diesel has an electric radiator fan. It only runs during the hot summer months, and then only once in a while. Not really needed.

But....in a big, underpowered bus where the mill is practically running flat out and cooling is marginal at best due to the engineering designs,..

....Then an electric fan motor may NOT be the way to go. It is a simple matter of the energy required to run the thing. Good luck.

Henry, on the left side of the screen (if your screen is like mine) you will see a section titled "Utilities" under that find "Keyword Search" and click on the folder icon. When the next page comes up, type something like 'electric fan' in the space provided and when you pull it up you are in the archives that have mention of 'electric' 'electric fan' 'fan', etc.
