What bothered me, was the paragraph that says:

NHTSA's failure to track all the accidents has given Congress and
the public a false impression that buses are safer than they are
and has thwarted efforts to promote tougher regulation, safety
advocates say.

It sure sounds like a major push for more regulation and the
collection of fees for "proper approval".

I will say (in my not-so-humble opinion), that the quality
of experienced drivers has suffered greatly since the inception
of the CDL system.

Many drivers (truck and bus) that know how to drive safely
after years of "hand's-on" experience, simply are not good
at taking tests. Some are near illiterate, and can't read the
questions. They are great drivers with millions of safe miles,
but are discarded for not being able to pass a written test.

Too much regulation, and not enough common sense.

Oh well...

John, while living in Timmonsville, SC. there was a truck driver training school about a half mile from us.
We stopped in to meet the instructors and see how they did, (I have over 3.5 million accident free miles under my belt), and to say the least.. it was frightening.
The head instructor had taken the Schneider truck driver training course, had become a trainer and then was offered a job at this 'school' after 8 months of experience.
He had never driven anything that wasn't drop and hook, had never driven anything that wasn't an auto or semi auto transmission and had no idea that his log book hours needed to match his actual day. In fact, he told us that he had never been through a DOT inspection... ever.

This is a guy that is training our drivers?

And this is an accredited school. by the federal government.

I think the big problem Dal, is that the industry isn't providing
enough input for the legislative process.

It's the industry that should be setting the guidelines. not some
college farm idiot.

The operator of a truck or bus company knows damned well
what kind of driver they deem safe and reliable. The driver
needn't know how to pass a test, they only have to know
how to drive safely, and that's proven by the driver's driving
history and experience.

The general public insists on safety factors, and demands a
safer operation of the industry. The legislators respond with
regulations that will appear to do wonders, but instead make
matters worse.

I really don't know what the answer is, but more regulation
isn't on the list. While less regulation will be worse with the
current system as-is, there needs to be a total revision of the
legislation that's already in place.

When the general public demands a "fix", legislation is generated
to humor the general public; if they don't satisfy their constituents,
they won't be in office another term.

The "fix" can be worse than no "fix", but they have to show that
they're listening to their constituents.

Who's to blame?

Worse, how do we fix it?

John

I saw that line John and thought the same thing. How many of those schools are like the boating license for captains? they teach you how to pass the test, sea time? what sea time. Great to see that new guy posting again.
