Hi,
I have a '75 two axel with a 671 and a fuller 5 speed I'm converting. Last fall my starter button on the dash quit working. I checked it out and the button seems to work but no start so I've been useing the one in the engine compartment. A few days ago it too stopped working. Now I must go chaseing wires. I NEED a wireing diagrahm. Has anyone got one they can copy for me. OR any ideas on what the problem might be? I found the starter solenoid in the engine compartment next to the big fuse. I shorted across it and started the motor. There are two wires connected to it besides the big ones, one orange and one brown. Where do these come from. How are the front and rear buttons tied together. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give. I'd rather not rewire the starting circuit.
I've posted this on the Crown boards but no response.
Thank you

In my crown in the engine compartment there's another switch, a pull-out type, that selects either the dash or the rear starter button. So the way it works is both the front and rear buttons go thru this switch, which enables one button or the other, and then a wire goes from the switch to the starter solenoid.

Perhaps this switch has gone bad (or is simply in the wrong position) since it's strange that both buttons would have their wiring fail. There's not a lot of Crown manuals out there that have the wiring dia (I don't have one), but it's not too hard to trace out because every wire is numbered and colored, at least on my bus. I have a '62, and the biggest wiring failure I've found (three times now) is crimps. Not the actual crimp mind you, but the lug separates from it's ring from vibration... looks like it's there but you can just grab it and pull, and the wire complete with intact crimp pulls away from the stud.

mebbie this helps... ??

Thanks for the information. I think I have a diagram on the way.
Gary, I have two push pull switches in the engine compartment. One is Ignition the other says Safety. Nothing happens when you pull the saftey switch so I don't know what it does.
Thanks again
Jerry

The "safety" switch is probably the one in question. Pulling it (or pushing.. I forget which) disables the driver's starter button so some dummie can't try to start the engine while you've got your hands in the fan shroud! If it's bad (or simply in the wrong position) the driver's button will be dead....

Cheers

I’ve got a Custom Crown, rear DD8v71, tag axle, full baggage bays, factory raised roof.

Didn’t have a wiring diagram either when I started the conversion, but now I don’t need it. My original wiring was a real maze. But, after removing the air conditioning and other unneeded systems, I had only about 50 wiring circuits left in the coach. Makes wiring a pretty simple job. I suspect the school coaches have more circuits due to the additional lights, just more wires to remove.

I did find two starter cutout switches in my coach. When either a baggage bay door, or an engine compartment door was ajar, these switches would be opened which would disable the driver’s starter button. I’m guessing this was so a passenger couldn’t start the coach while the driver was removing luggage or checking on the engine.

If you’ve got a school coach, West Coach in Chino, CA is a big help. However, they ain’t got squat for the Custom Crowns, can’t even cross-reference my Crown part numbers. Still, that hasn’t been a problem, everything on my coach is built like a Sherman tank, very very few parts even needed minor maintenance, most everything just needed a good cleaning, and I’ve disassembled/reassembled most of it.
